...heh... After feeling the awesomeness of the 8800GTS 320MB and the pure value and power it packs I want it! Should I join the darkside? Nvidia? I seriously feel its geat... the 8800GTS, the card is so solid, the cooler is so quiet and also very nice. The nice green PCB will suit my motherboard and my performance will be literally doubled. I'll only be using one PCI-E 16x so i dont need to reroute all the stuff. The PCB is the same size as my X1950PRO as well...

I had one in my PC for one hour... awesome!

65*C with crappy thermal paste is good! With AS5 + IHS ill get like 60*C. It doenst run as hot as most of you guys say... the 8800GTS 320MB is godlike!!!

So yeah very soon ill be selling my X1950PRO, for around $180 to $170... (USD).... its so nice... green PCB... DX10... small PCB... nice cooler....

Anyways back to ATI... HD2900Xt would have been on my buy list if it was:

-Cheaper than it is
-Without the odd performance drops
-2 PCI-E power plugs...

Power usage of the 8800's is a lot lower than the 2900's, personally this is the main reason to forget about the 2900. Performance wise they compete quite well to eachother.
I might go for a 2900 if they improve the core and make it use about 100W less.

For a moment then I thought you were going AMD :p.....

Keep your card dammit.
There will be bigger and better things to buy later :D

Sure? HD2600XT would be on my buy list if u recommended it...

Been looking into that one, can't find performance numbers and power usage. If it performs at like 75% of my 8800gts and uses less power I'd consider it. Though seeing it's specs compared to the 2900 I doubt that will happen.

I didnt mean this generation of ATI cards... cant you wait for the next lot of DX10 to come out? Its not that long a wait...

I specifically bought an X1950 Pro so that I could wait until DX10 becomes more mainstream and still play games at a reasonably high level of graphics.

Just stick with what you have for now. Wait for the next round. I made the same mistake you did. I want from an x800GTO2(16pp) to a 7800GTX because it was just too tempting, then a month later the 7900GT came out, it was faster, used less power, put out less heat, overclocked better, and was $100 cheaper. I really didn't even need the 7800GTX either, so I was so pissed when the 7900GT came out and made my 7800GTX look like crap.

8800GTS... so tempting

i have to agree i was very tempted a week ago im starting to get angry some games dont have profiles so i get half the performance of my card and both fans are loud when cards on load but im going to resist and keep my card and wait until some dx10 games are out (like crysis) if 8800 performs well ill get one they probably be cheaper then aswell...even tho 320mb is cheap enough

also when the 2900xt drivers mature it might perform good

The x1950PRO is soooooooo much weaker than the 8800. I have them both. The 8800 plays Oblivion on 1280x1024 with all sliders all the way up aside from grass distance, which is about 3/4 of the way up! With that, it never drops below 35fps (FRAPS, outside, near oblivion gates, in the rain, on a horse, everything), so it could probably do 1680x1050 on the same settings and keep it playable.

lol just get the 8800 already. not like you can't switch back to ati in a year or two when they've regained the performance crown.

That's what I do. There's no point being a fanboy. I've had an X800GTO, X1950XT, 8800GTS 320, and an x1950PRO for my secondary computer. Go back far enough and I have a TNT2 Ultra (and an MX440, and FX5500 for old non-gaming computers...oh, and an old Geforce2 of some sort that died years ago) sitting around. I'm no fanboy, and it works for me. Just get whatever is best for the money at the moment.

yea i am with you there. the 8800gts is truly an amazing card. ive been quite tempted to get one but considering the lack of great dx10 games i dont see the point yet.

It is extremely fast in DX9 as well, DX10 is a nice extra.

oh yea, no doubt. i just dont feel the need to spend the money yet for an upgrade. the x1800xt does everything just fine for now!

tk, unless you *absolutely* need to have it, don't go for it. I had a x1950pro and I bought an Evga 8800GTS 320mb and honestly, it doesn't make too much of a difference in games. Sure, benchmarks may tell you otherwise but in reality, it's not too much of a difference (for the games I play, anyway). So if you're getting decent framerates with your x1950pro, keep it for another 6 months to a year and wait to see what nVidia and ATI cook up.

edit: I forgot to add that the one thing I really hate about the 8800 is the ungodly amount of heat it produces. Not that I hate the card or anything, but it gets kind of annoying as the heat rises into my CPU heatsink, raising temps by a couple of C. Great card overall though :)
