hi guys,

this is my rig:
e6400 @ 3.2 1.34 volts under a big typhoon
p5b deluxe wifi
2gb ballistix tracer 8500 @ ddr2 1000 4-4-4-8 2.1 volts
7900gto @ gtx
2 80gb 7200 RPM IDE hard drives
audigy se sound card

what is the best and cheapest psu i could buy to power the rig. theres a crappy 400W one powering it now, but it only has a 20 pin motherboard connector and no pci-e connector. it also droops like crazy. nothing expensive please, by that i mean > 100, id also like to get another 7900 gto in the future at some point so could u suggest something that would power that as well?

Hey man,

Check out this thread under the PSU Buyers Guide ( http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=30822 ).
Under the budget section there are quite a few quality PSUs.

Holy crap, that one hat just linked is your best bet, 54 amps on the 12 and its not dual rail, because dual rail is crap and overrated. If you do spend the money, that PSU is amazing

Yes, Silverstone makes very good quality PSU's.

Dual rail is overrated?

It's getting harder and harder to find new single rail PSU's in the upper wattage. All the name brand and very high PSU's have dual rail, and most of the really new ones have quad rail. Most good new ones are 72A and the great high end ones are 90A+ on hte 12v rails.

Isn't multiple rails for redundancy to reduce voltage fluctuations? How is that overrated and a bad thing? Especially since all the really good PSU's use dual and quad rails.

EDIT: I would probably buy this PSU over any of the others mentioned here so far, considering the price is "close" to what others have linked to:

I would still go for the silverstone.

Hmmm now I gotta say this would be a hard decision for anyone.
On one hand you have the Silverstone 650W:
1. Has 1 rail with 54A avail.
2. Great brand and quality build
3. Cheap compared to the performance and quality you get
4. Effeciency of about 80 percent
5. 650W of Peak performance (means that average it will be around 600W total output)
6. Solid and Stable
7. Very little ripple

Then you have the Corsair HX620W:
1. Has virtual rails - This means that there are 2 rails which act like one rail, so there is not that much overhead when compared to standard 2+ rail PSUs).
2. Great brand and quality build
3. Effeciency of about 85 percent (highest for a PSU these days)
4. 620W of average performance - These PSUs are conservatively rated and are not rated at peak like other PSUs.
5. Solid and Stable
6. Very little ripple
7. Modular

Then you have the Thermaltake PSU
1. Modular
2. Effeciency is about 80 percent
3. 750W at peak performance (average is around 650W - 700W)
4. Four rails - There is a good amount of overhead when one rail needs more juice
5. Solid and Stable
6. Little ripple

Here take a look at www.jonnyguru.com (one of the best sites for PSU reviews). He reviews both of these PSUs.
I would still go with the Corsair bc it is the best built, plus it is just as powerful (if not more) powerful than the Silverstone and the Thermaltake).
Yes the Silverstone has 1 rail (so no amps are lost), however, the Corsair has a higher effeciency and more watts avail. at peak, so they would perform about the same.
Plus with the Corsair you get modular cables (a nice bonus).
You cannot go wrong with the Corsair.

Remember not everything is just about Watts and amps on the 12V rails. There are other factors to consider

Ok, dual rail is crap unless it has active rail, which I still wouldn't get. Dual rail splits you rails to go to certain places which they lower the amps towards each rail. You do NOT combine the amps per rail to figure out the max amps on the 12, only if it has active rail. With 1 rail your parts will take just what they need no more no less if you have enough amps, dual rails choke your system unless they are like 1000+. So either high amp'd active rail, or 1 rail with high amps. And overclockin, where are you finding 90+ on the rails, you do not combine them, the rails are seperate.

I wouldn't necessarily say all that you say is true, I've read many and in fact my Corsair HX520 states in specs/reviews/descriptions that it is able to spread the amperage load across all 3 12v rails I have or focus it on the rail that needs the juice the most. And I have this 520W PSU, 3x 12v rails, check my sys specs, and no issues. Voltages are solid, don't budge.

I've seen to many people on different sides of the 12v rail arguement, so far I haven't had problems and I like having dedicated amperage to seperate components, etc. Plus if it can spread the load to the component that needs a few more amps or what-not then there's no problems, at least from my perspective.

Each of my 12v rails are worth approx 18A. PSU runs cool, very quiet and very, very stable, plus the price wasn't bad either.

The silverstone is cheapest and will be futureproof. This guy only wanteed a cheapo $50 one, the silverstone is $120 or so sure, but both other options are more expensive, and I think the silverstone is the top dog between the three, at least second place.

yea i came to my senses, through down 120 and got a corsair hx 520. its coming in 2moro! im excited, should let me overclock way more with a 24 pin connector vs. the 20 pin mine has now, and the way more stable voltage rails.

You should enjoy it, great PSU. Heavy and comes with plenty of wires/connections. My voltages all were more stable compared to my Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W, which I thought was pretty stable, till I installed this guy, the voltages never budge! Except for V-Droop, but even at that both went up .01v (idle and load voltages)!

Keep us posted!

Just to let you guys know, the Corsair psus are actually single rail and are made by Seasonic. JonnyGURU dissected them to find out all the traces go back to one rail. They're split "after the fact".

The 520HX is a fine psu for his rig. 40A on the 12v.
