Even Asus Xonar DGX is much better than onboard

Bad RMA policy, bad fans, often the loudest cooling solution in the comparisons at dimilar price points.

Speaking from experience, my 780ti Windforce was not very good. Didnt even hit 1 Ghz...

All other brand cards ive owned were more quiet and better bins too

My old Gigabyte 980 Ti G1 ran 1580/2050 for years. How can you judge a brand from a single card?
G1 uses cherry picked chips. GPU Gauntlet. One of the best OC cards I've ever owned.
Not better or worse than Asus or MSI

yeah, right now tempted to just return the card and order same new one but from different retailer. I really like this card and now when turned out that audio issues are because of the motherboard tempted to give this card another chance.

You didn't "waste" £500, your board probably has alot of extra features, better VRMs etc. I'd just get a Asus Xonar DGX or DX, disable onboard sound, and see if the problem is gone.

graphics card still will have coil whine issues. I will post a vid when i get back from work to show how loud it gets under load.

Weird stuff imo, buying a soundcard when you have an ALC1220 already. I would return the whole order and start anew, its completely ridiculous buying more hardware to fix an issue that appears upon purchase.

Onboard is pretty bad unless you use low-end headphones or speakers anyway.
I'd never settle with onboard audio. Dedicated card or DAC.

isn't it just matter of preference? lol why such hate for Gigabyte?

I've spent enough years on this site to have seen more than their share of "horror stories" from customers complaining about scummy RMA refusal tactics , to low quality products failing earlier than they should. For example, say you have a fan that dies on your card, and you send it in for RMA ,they look at the card ,and find a small superficial scratch on the HDMI port on the gpu's i/o , warranty voided. I can't say they do it all the time, but I have seen many threads here ,and heard stories elsewhere ,about them looking for ANY reason to refuse your warranty (however unrelated it is to the issue you're having). No company is Perfect, but i avoid Gb like herpes, & i suggest anyone i personally know, or care for to also do the same.

I'd say live with it , most cards have coil whine. If you'll get another one it will likely have coil whine as well.

And I seriously cannot understand how the hell would a sound card fix that , who do you even got to that conclusion ? If you want to buy something , get some noise cancelling headphones and be done with this problem forever.

Send the gpu back for a different brand. Also onboard audio is prone to electrical noise. The only thing I can suggest is making sure a tab on the io shield isnt touching the wrong spot of io ports, add a grounding strap from case going straight to ground and a grounding strap from mobo to chassis...

Noise cancelling headphones won't help you when EMI noise leaks through to the sound devices.
When a separate circuit is introduced, it helps in isolating the interference and therefore reduce the whine in speakers/headphones.

One of my kids motherboard has poor shielding for its onboard audio , which resulted in a high-pitched whine when scrolling mouse or browsing the Internet. For $10 I bought a external sound card with USB and 3.5 mm ports ,and it resolved the issue entirely.

the device below, installs a separate audio driver, and seems to handle minimal audio needs just fine. it has been a great help dealing with the many issues i have encountered with windows 10 constant audio breaking updates as well. plus it is a usb hub & 3.5mm extension :)

But thats just it, a board in this price segment already comes with a dedicated segment for audio and it has very good audio at that. A DGX wont make any difference on that. So just get a proper board. I have an Asrock z370 with same audio chip and if sounds pretty damn good, big step up from my old Z77 one (which happens to be a Gigabyte ;)).

Thats why Im saying an additional sound card is silly when an Alc1220 is properly implemented. I have zero EMI here even when running at high refresh... and EVEN when recording from an audio passthrough that is fully analog....

No I just get proper hardware and if it doesnt work as intended, I swap or return it... lol... luck. Just take the effort to exercise your rights as a customer

I've never tried an onboard solution that came close to a (good) dedicated soundcard or DAC. Just because there's no EMI noise leak does not mean the solution is good.
With a $50-100 gaming headset you might not notice much difference tho. Good cans/speakers requires a proper audio solution.

Out of curiosity , do you use the audio output directly from the motherboard or the one that's from the front I/O case panel ?

If you are to RMA something , it should be the motherboard having atrocious interference caused by the GPU of all things like you describe it's not normal and it could indicate some serious grounding issue.

If the whine still happens even with the old GPU, it's not a fault of your graphics card, it's a problem with either motherboard power or onboard audio, or both. That also means it's not "coil whine", but EMI https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_interference#EMI_in_integrated_circuits . My Gigabyte Z97X Gaming3 has a pretty good onboard audio, but even my old and worn out ears can hear the difference (sound clarity and less noise) when i use an external USB card - a cheap ASUS Xonar U3.

i didn't spend 600$ to just live with it. lol

directly from motherboard, front I/O has no issues besides being front I/O and giving terrible quality output. lol

graphics card coil whine and audio issues are unrelated. I thought at first that they are, turn out they are not.

UPDATE. Well, today got Xonar DSX and after testing it - issues with audio persist which now makes me think that all the issues are caused by motherboard and grounding issues. Which could cause issues with graphics card too?

UPDATE2. Also today SATA port randomly stopped working which made me reconnect my hard drive to different port. lol. Soo... looks like mobo is being sent back. lol

Called it , RMA the motherboard.

Actually SATA cables can often be flaky.

yeah, doing it on saturday, going to get new mobo and see if issues with graphics card persist, hopefully not. If it causes so much interference on pci-e slots i'm hoping that's what causes issues with graphics card too

Vya is also correct about SATA flat cables. They dont like sharp bends.

Hope you get this resolved smoothly. Annoying stuff, this

very annoying. Interestingly it affects sound card much worse that onboard audio, with sound card i get interference constantly not just in video games.

Going to swap motherboards tomorrow and see how graphics card perform on old motherboard. Hoping i don't have to RMA it too.

That proves (to me) that the problem is related to power (PCI-E slot and onboard audio get power from the same source). Hope that returning the motherboard soves your problem. If not, i'd check the power supply for ripple. I didn't bother to check, but is that card powered from a separate power connector like the Xonar DX?
