University Blames iPhone for WiFi Problems

Duke University in the United States blames the iPhone for crippling its wireless lan. According to the university, a single iPhone has flooded its wireless network by sending out thousands of address resolution protocol (ARP) requests per second taking down 30 Cisco WAPs for 10 to 15 minutes. So far there hasnt been a definative reason why this is happening and the university says it is not their Cisco equipment.

yup! however it is probably a combination of things. im sure the iphone has a bug and im sure the IT people at duke are dumb.

I agree Wil E. It doesnt seem plausible. I like how their IT people were describing how the phone can cripple their WiFi systems though. Probably just some joke to get some kick back from apple. I dont see 500 Iphones causing that much of a problem and that is only a guesstimate at how much may be there.

Duke wouldn't have very many students on campus right now. I'm sure they have some, but the bulk of their class would be off for the summer, I have several friends at Duke, and unless they all just bought iphones and drove down to Duke, they're still up in Pennsylvania. And even with those students, Duke isn't a very large school. Anyway, I wonder how many of their students that stay during the summer have iphones anyway...

i don't care what anyone says wifi is pretty half ass as far as speed even at 108g with 100% signal pages load slower than my 1gbps lan compared to my friends core 2 sitting 12ft from the router

yeah thats nice except that unless you are LAN gaming the 108mbps is plenty to flow the all of 6mbps that you get off the faster highspeed enets

Those latencys are very minimal with G, and should get even better with N.

I play games over my B network all the time without ANY issue.

My G network is just as good if not better.

Although thousands of arp's per second?

Someone needs to learn how to configure their cisco routers.

You know.. see an immense overflow of packets from a single source... PING device ignored temporarily... not exactly rocket science is it?

Our catalyst 3550's do it...

No, I never said they were the same.

But 120ms or 60ms aren't gonna make a difference :rolleyes:

Most games you will not and really, shouldn't see a latency difference unless you are at 0, or >200ms.

I Play FPS's, RTS's and RPG's perfectly fine via wireless.

Latency is perfectly acceptable and assumed, within a certain range. This is like PSU's today, overhyped.

yeah i just put in a g with speedbooster (125mb/sec) it performs just as well as my 10/100 so i see no difference in browser speeds like i said you dont need anywere near the amount of data transfer available on 1gb lan waste of money is what it is

Unless you share large files between multiple computers on your network.
