I feel like getting a 22"

Ok, so I feel like a bigger screen .

I dont know much about monitors.
But Im doing gfx work so I need a monitor (LCD is a must - no desk space for CRT) with colour accuracy, high refresh for games and it needs to be sub $500.

Im liking the idea of a 22" since I use photoshop alot and the extra screen room will be like being crammed into a room full of sexually deprived women.

Ive been looking through newegg and the price range varies between really cheap ~$300 and the $1000 mark. So Im trying to reach an acceptable compromise.

Acer has a nice 1680x1050 20" monitor that is M-PVA and 16.7m colors, with a killer price. I know it's not 22", but it's the same resolution, so it won't look as grainy.

Acer has a nice 1680x1050 20" monitor that is M-PVA and 16.7m colors, with a killer price. I know it's not 22", but it's the same resolution, so it won't look as grainy.

Id like a monitor with the same height as a regular 19" with the added width offered by widescreen. (I hate how 19" widescreens are shorter :shadedshu)

Also, one other point. Is contrast ratio a big thing? I see some with like 700:1 and others with 3000:1 and I wonder about how much impact it has and why some are substandard to others.

same lcd but cheaper. I have never heard anything bad about samsung monitors. We have a heap of the 19in models at work and they are really nice.

@drunkenmafia Finding LCD's that fit the 22" criteria is the easy part, its getting something with a high resolution to match the screen size + getting a screen with a good panel thats gonna suck. Oh well, my birthday is coming up so hopefully I can find one

Then I can use my 19" as a "Small" secondary monitor

Strive1 modded his 22" Acer to 1920x1200 and humm there has been talk of a 1080p 22" monitor around here.. but thier prob all TN Panels or the ones you shouldnt be after anyway.

Maybe you'll find a samsung 24" 225 for a good price.

I think someone already mentioned the Apple. Hmm I can imagine that being good, apple gear is generally of decent quality.

BTW - Mum just said I can definately get a 24" but its going to have to wait until my birthday in about 2 months time .

AND ALSO:

-Don't get the Dell 2407 24" LCD... many confirmed repots if it having horrible color banding, and that Dell is still shipping the old Firmware versions which leaves the problem un-resolved.
-Also, having Component on the Dell isn't useful unless your watching HD in the 720p format (If it tries to display full HD 1080i resolution, it will change it to 540 pixels making it look like standard definition.
-Some people (Just search the Dell.com forums if you want to confirm this) recieve their Dell 2407 with a backlight that is NOT uniform, and is brighter in some places. Also known as "backlight bleed".
-Many poeple have thier monitor alighned crooked and landscape mode, becuase the stand is not very sturdy.

-Get the Acer AL2423W because:
-It has 50 higher cdm/2 brightness
-All 20 revies on Newegg rate it 4 EGGS! Not ONE bad review! (on CNET.com, one in every five reviews was bad for the Dell 2407).
-It has no reports of colour banding, and is an S-MVA panel, thus it has a full 8-bit colour gamut; where the Dell is 6-bit.
-It has an "Input Lag" of 20ms, lower than most 24" monitors. Input Lag is the time before you move your mouse (or type) and it shows up on screen -- this is not listed on the product's page; you must search on the web to find this fact out most of the time.
-The Dell's input lag is rated between about 35-45MS, which would of course be slightly more noticable.
-The Acer comes with speakers 8)
-It's on sale for $699 with FREE 3-day shipping.

Please, whatever you do, DO NOT get the 244t. It has a rated input lag measure of ~45-60 ms which is VERY noticable. Some say it is, some say it isn't. But, it's certainly NOT worth buying such an expensive monitor just to see if the mouse / input lag issue is true, when i'm pretty sure it is.

Im caught here, because the 24" monitors are $300 more at the very least and they dont seem to offer much compared to 22"s which I can easily get a good screen for ~$500. The ideal 24" would be one with the 1920x1200 resolution. All of these monitors are >$800.
Hard to say the extra 2" is worth $300, but the resolution offered sure is attractive

ive got a Dell 24" 2407WFP screen, its really awsome. and i love the picture-in-picture facility, so while your surfing etc, you can watch another input in a small screen, say from a dvd player etc..

I got this a while back and was pretty expensive then, but im certain it would have came down in price

I couldnt find a price for that one on my usual search engine (www.staticice.com.au - damn awesome).

But the Dell website has the monitor on sale here:

Costs $1000-$1800 delivered. The acer has the same specs for $200 less. The only thing Id need to confirm is the refresh rate of the acer. But still, the dell looks like a decent monitor. However, its currently $300 off, so it should be $1300.

I suppose I could check out the Dell Outlet though (Edit just checked - they had nothing )
