the easiest is to check the new rigs from users on TPU (not mine is 1 year old )
and check the prices/component

a core2 rig is the best now (even i like AMD) and i have seen good rigs here;if isn't urgent you can wait the release of new AMD procs is not too far;then the prices we'll fall again and is possible that this CPU-s will be better;who knows?

GPU you have 2 options for your budget:8800gts 320M/640M or HD2900XT

good luck !

Id say your looking at a Core 2 Duo system.
965 series motherboard.
2gigs DDR2 PC6400 RAM
Video card depends, can get really pricey. Depends on the types of games you play.
Probably a cheapie case <$100
480watt BRANDED psu, more watts/amps if your going for a higher end Video Card
A fast and large capacity hard drive, either a Raptor, Spinpoint or a Seagate 7200.9 or 7200.10
DVD Burner

OR Im sure an AMD fanboy could get you a cheaper CPU and MOBO combo from the AMD range.
Ive heard the X2 6000+ competes alright with the core 2 line at stock clocks.
Im not in any way an AMD follower, so I dont know shit about their stuff, but yeah, something to consider.
