While Microsoft is still praying that its latest API, DirectX 10 will 'convince' people into buying Windows Vista the OpenGL Architecture Review Board has officially announced OpenGL 3. Unveiled at SIGGRAPH in San Diego, California, OpenGL 3 is the official name of the project previously known as OpenGL Longs Peak. According to the Khronos Group OpenGL 3 "provides a solid, consistent and well thought out basis for the future." Still in the works and including some features already included in DirectX 10 features like geometry shaders, OpenGL 3 is set to be finalized at the end of this month at the next meeting of the OpenGL ARB. More ammo for Carmack.

Great, and I am buying an Opengl 2.0 card... I'm sick of being left behind damnit

For those of you who don't know, OpenGL is another standard of graphics processing. OpenGL was the hot stuff like Direct X is now, but when DX surfaced everyone jumped on that, but some things still require OpenGL so they never stopped making it. If DirectX never surfaced, we would be looking at the 8800's going OMG OPENGL 10!!

But unlike direct X, OGL is multiplatform.

Which is why direct x is going to fall like a ton of bricks in a few years, flat on its face. Its already begun.

Also, found some slides from the Siggraph conference where it was announced and the specifications documents as well.
