Hey...a few weeks ago I got a virus which stopped my PC from booting and causing blue screen errors. It got stored on CMOS so I wiped it...although it was still left on my two hard drives - even though I wiped them both and I fear it may be on the OS discs as well (Vista and XP):cry:.

My question today is, where can a virus spread to? Can it spread to CDs or even RAM? (Im only 14 so please excuse my lack of virus knowledge).

I don't think it can be spread to a CD, but it CAN be in your RAM. I would unplug the computer, reset CMOS, take RAM and CPU out for about 30 mins, and install a new hard drive. If that doesn't do it, nothing will.

Virus can cause boot/reboot? Virus can effect ram and cpu?

Virus can damage your system and make your computer wont start up?

For all this time I only thought Virus can only effect the inside system that can act as spyware, keylogger, use your computer to attack others computer etc.. I did not know that Virus can cause computer wont start up.

I am an average user.

how do you know this is a virus afaik no virus can "store" itself in your cmos and no virus can survive a format, what akes you think its not a hardware fault as thats why you get bsod's?

I know its a virus because Vista has no blue screens AFAIK. Also, when I clear CMOS it works until next startup.

My mum has had a virus like this before which I managed to clear by clearing CMOS.

when you say you have cleared cmos, did you boot at default settings or oc'd ones???

Also, I have heard of virus' getting into your cmos and master boot. I definitely have not heard of virus' getting onto a cd, unless you burnt it on there.

A virus can theoretically store itself on your ram but when power is removed so is the info on the ram...

vista blue screens. Never ever heard of a virus store itself in CMOS, its not really possible.

Clearning CMOS sounds more like its a hardware issue, and loading defaults fixes it - overclocking too high, bad ram, etc.

Undo the overclock, and raise the NB voltage a notch or two. That helps stability on that mobo... but i highly doubt you have a virus.

Oh and forgot to mention - a blue screen also appeared telling me to remove all anti-virus apps, and backup utilities and all anti-spyware. Naturally I didn't remove the apps. I wouldn't think Windows would refuse to boot because of these apps...would it?

for all you non bealivers

http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/c/cmosviru.htm

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_1440.htm

i want to quote this

CMOS is a memory resident, Master Boot Record (MBR)/Boot Sector infector. CMOS is a destructive virus, as it erases the system's CMOS or Setup information about once in every 60 bootups.

Upon infection, the virus infects the system's hard disk MBR. It becomes memory resident the next time the system is booted from the newly infected hard drive. It infects every diskette that is accessed.

Prepare a bootable disk (ie, CD, NOT floppy.) with the latest BIOS for your mobo on another system. Put the disk in your system and flash your BIOS with the following command;

awdflash.exe *BIOSfilename*.bin /py/sn/Wb/cd/cc/cp

That will ensure no virus is lurking within your current BIOS. After the flash remove power, battery and set CMOS jumper to clear position for 10 mins.

If its a virus thats residing in the CMOS chip itself, I doubt any virus scanner will be able to pick it up.

thats all well and good but even if this is true what is the chances of being infected with this ??? millions to one? ive never come across anything like this nor heard of anyone with a virus such as this. also look at the dates "Description Added 11/30/1998" with removal instructions for win 95/98 :wtf:

you really think its some kind of super virus rather than somthing to do with his oc/hardware

oh what can it mean to a day dream believer

No, itll be residing most likely in the bootblock portion of the CMOS chip. Its only software, and can be overwritten. The commands I gave will overwrite every area of the CMOS chip.

a possibality that he might have it? were did you get your million to one info? ever heard of viruses in the wild? he did say he was 14 and had no clue what was going on. perhaps he did get it and doesnt have the proper software to remove it?

and i would make it a point to never try and insult me with weak quotes again.

@kett well it has to infect someway and in that particular virus inorder to reinfect it has to save to the boot part of the HDD perhaps this one works the same way. in which case scanning at boot will make sure the chip is not reinfected.

I have seen two compys with CMOS, AKA BIOS viri. That is still why they have disk protection and BIOS protection in the BIOS. TO prevent unauthorized changes to the system. It also will protect from certain low level rootkits. Ever heard of those? VMware rootkit a machine and you are the one in real control.

The other protection is NX bit, No Execute, it protects parts of the RAM and CMOS by preventing a program from executing from protected storage. But some are still able to get by by copying themselves to a higher memory address that is not marked as in use usually.

my "insult" wasnt a quote and if that does insult you maybe you shouldnt socialise with people as its called a sense of humour where im from, yes hes 14 as stated and he said he hasnt had any exp with virus, so the fact that you can dig that up from years of archives just to back up this theory that its a virus embedded in his cmos makes me lol

how can you rule out his hardware or oc or vid card? what are the chances it is a virus over a hardware conflict/oc etc etc?? not that great imo

Here's an idea - get a Linux Live cd/dvd, and boot from it...

If it boots and it's perfectly stable then it's a virus, if it fails to boot or you get kernel errors then it's a hardware issue.

I can socialize just not usually with the likes of you.

As for me ruling things out perhaps you should see the reasoning behind my post go ahead read it again, You obviously did not pay enought attention the first time. It was to prove to you and the few others which it did regardless of how outdated the fact that their are CMOS viruses. And good sir since as you pointed out they are sooooo old you would think that it might be possible to make a new better one? but maybe you didnt think of that. If you look at what i typed i backed up that their were CMOS viruses and to make sure their were not i told him he should virus scan incase he has a newer version of that type of virus. I do not bealive i stated any ware that their was no possible way it could be an overclocking issue nor do i think i in anyway did i discredit your ideas....

please prove me wrong.

as for this argument you are hardly worth my time a simple infraction should be enough to keep you in line.

I do not bealive i stated any ware that their was no possible way it could be an overclocking issue nor do i think i in anyway did i discredit your ideas....

please prove me wrong.

as for this argument you are hardly worth my time a simple infraction should be enough to keep you in line.

you backed nothing up with that outdated piece of 10 year information whatsoever. and "not with the likes of me" wtf is that supposed to mean, oh its ok for you to run your mouth at me cause your a mod, and youve probably had a shitty day but i make a joke and didnt insult you and receive an infraction, you know what mate YOUR A JOKE.

surely if its in the cmos and it attacks the cmos chip not windows it wouldnt make a difference with linux installed ?

I interpreted the first post to suggest than he can boot windows, but it BSOD's on him...

Well if he boots Linux, the windows code won't run under the Linux kernel so it should show the problem.
