Well my Hiper Type-R died for the second time yesterday night. I was just sitting in bed watching TV when my computer just turns off. I turn it back on to see what is up and it starts to boot then turns off again.

Obviously something is overheating, this is confirmed by the fact that the longer I leave it off the longer it will stay on before turning itself off.

So I boot into the BIOS to watch temps and everything looks normal, then it suddenly turns off again.

I pop it open and instantly feel the heat just coming off my Type-R power supply, so a quick swap out, and sure enough the computer boots up and runs without a problem.

Most people would say, oh well, it happens. However, this is the second time this power supply has died on me out of nowhere(the first time it blew a fuse in my house when it went too):banghead::banghead:.

So no more Hiper power supplies for me, though in it's defence it was pretty heavily loaded, so that is probably what caused it, but I'm not taking any chances.

So what do you guys recommend for my main system(in system specs to the left)?

I was thinking a Thermaltake Toughpower 750w, but am open to other suggestions, it just has to be around $160 and modular.

I would say the Thermaltake would be a nice choice. But hey there is always somebody after me who says to buy something else.

Isay the Corsair 620HX. It runs my system overclocked, and it rarely heats up, even under full load. Very top quality.

you can get a PC P&C 610 silencer for $30 or so less than the silverstone and corsair and it just has 5 amps less on the 12V rail..they go for $120 on pc P&c's manufactur website

I was reading up on that Thermaltake, it oughta treat you quite well!

Maybe a PC Power and Cooling series, and I also agree with you that modular must be a requirement. Modular PSU's make wire routing and life much easier! I'd recommend a Corsair 620HX, which is great, modular, I use the 520W version, but you may want more of a buffer, so I vote Thermaltake FTW! :toast:

The Corsair has every bit the quality of the PCP&C. It's a Seasonic. Plus, although it's advertised as a multi rail psu, it's actually a single rail, that's "split" after the fact.

Yep I know, I love my HX520! It's the best PSU I've ever owned, it's quiet, stays very cool compared to other PSU's I've used, is rock solid on voltage readouts, I've used mine for about 3 months now without a single problem what-so-ever! :rockout:

newtekie1, you could start a poll, have your Thermaltake 750, Corsair HX620W, and PC P&C 610, see which one tally's the most votes. All 3 are excellent, just depends on which one fits your needs and what features you want, looks, etc. Frankly I gotta re-vote for the Corsair, but if you get a poll, then we could see what everyone agrees on for your setup.

Pretty much, no matter which one you choose, you won't lose! :toast:

Why do you want 700W+? The 620HX is more than enough for your system.

580w wasn't enough, so upping it just 40w doesn't really sit well with me. Plus I don't plan to keep the two 7900GTs forever, the money for the new power supply is coming out of my graphics card savings.

Woah buddy... are you calling PC P&C a "low quality" company?

Newtekie, pc P&C doesnt make modular. I was going to get a modular before i found PC P&C. But honestly i didnt want the risk that comes with a modular. it adds a point of weakness for a short

I've never had a short from a modular PSU or known anyone that has, unless Newtekie's Hiper's PSU's problem stemmed from that, I think it was PSU quality myself. But the tighter the fit, the better, Corsair's have a very solid feel and the plugs fit nice and snug, my first modular was an Antec which was nice, but the plugs didn't fit as snugly as the corsair's.

If 620W isn't enough for ya, then get that Thermaltake 750 and be done with it! :rockout:

580w wasn't enough, so upping it just 40w doesn't really sit well with me. Plus I don't plan to keep the two 7900GTs forever, the money for the new power supply is coming out of my graphics card savings.
It's more than enough, newtekie. It pumps out 50A on the 12V rails. It's enough to run 2 8800GTXs. The Hiper couldn't hack it because it doesn't have near the same quality level. But if 700W+ and modular is what you want, the Seasonic M series is my recommendation.

It's not that I have anything against the Thermaltake, I just don't know much about them.

Here's Jonny Guru's reviews of the Thermaltake, Seasonic, and Corsair.

Corsair 620w

My vote still goes to the Corsair.
