Can anyone help me in choosing the right CPU for my ASRock 775vm800 motherboard?

I'm wondering if the 'Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.20GHz (800FSB)' is good choice. The spec for the mobo says it's dual-core, socket 775, 800fsb so I'm assuming this cpu will be compatible, but not sure. Would it be pointless getting a cpu with its fsb speed above 800 as that is the limit of my mobo?

Can anyone recommend the best cpu that will run with my motherboard?

That mobo doesn't support the Core2 series. The best you can have on that is a Pentium D of some sort (e.g. 3.6ghz).

The easiest thing to do would be to look on thier website to see if Core2's are supported.

Let me check....

According to thier site, the answer is no. Core 2's are not supported.

I'm a beginner, I really don't know where to start looking for info, so I thought I'd post here. Would it be worth upgrading from my P4 3ghz to say a Pentium D 3.4ghz? Or go with a whole new mobo/cpu?

Well decide what you want to get out of it, to you want hi stock clocks, or do you want to OC to get there, spend a little more on cooling and save on the CPU cost?

I'd say start with Google, find out more about what you have, what you want to replace it with, what it's capable, and if it fits your needs and your wallet. If you're new, then you have a lot to read, research and learning are huge when it comes to this stuff. We can recommend different CPU's for various reasons, but it comes down to you making the decision and paying the money, so you should know and understand why you are making that purchase and what the benefits and consequences are.

You may decide to get a different setup completely, that's what I ended up doing, I made a budget of between $800-900 when at first all I wanted was a CPU upgrade. And with prices now, you can build a very decent PC with a budget like that, which will treat you quite well!

nah... the pentium D's sucked mate... if I were you I would go for a C2d and new mb. It won't cost all that much more... E4400 - ~$120 and a decent mb - ~$90.

Much better option imo.

Well if you don't mind replacing ram/video card/processor and mainboard then a new mobo would be the way to go by far and an e4400 is a great chip for a great price!

But if you don't want to burn that kinda money a Intel 915 D would be a good choice they are a lot faster than even HT P4's..

In fact if you want I have a 915 D I might be interested in selling also.

I recently built a Pentium D 925 system for a client that featured XP PRO 64 and 4GB of PNY DDR2 667 memory. It definitely was not a bad system for the money so I would agree with others saying and just get yourself a decent Pentium D chip for your current system.

The Pentium D I posted is pretty good but it doesn't come with a heatsink, but he has an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7... it's just cheaper and easier to go with the PD.

if you can stretch to it another option would be the asrock dual-vsta board it has agp+pcie and ddr + ddr2 (main reason these boards are quite popular) so you could keep your existing ram and agp card while going c2d :toast:

Thanks all for your help! :toast:
While tempting, the C2D + 775Dual-VSTA (and new case) is beyond what I can afford, so I'll opt for the far simpler solution and get myself a Pentium D. I found a 925 for £55 ($110) and a 940 for £85 ($170) which I could stretch to, but could the 925 be overclocked beyond the 940's speed with decent cooling? I have an Arctic Freezer 7 and a Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm case fan.

the d930 i had used to go up to 4ghz easy,4.4ghz was the max.it ran hot but was a decent chip at the time.

Get the 925, the 940 just has virtualization over the 925 and a little more clock speed, in reality its barely any faster, and really not worth the extra cash.

On second thought, I could get a ASRock 775Dual-VSTA and Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 for £110 which seems worth that bit extra. Reading up on the C2D has whet my appetite. My current mobo supports ddr400 if 1gb is used, but only ddr333 if 2gb is used, which always bugged me (I have 2x 1gb ddr400), also having a pci-e slot, faster fsb and memory slots would be good for future upgrades.
You may decide to get a different setup completely, that's what I ended up doing, I made a budget of between $800-900 when at first all I wanted was a CPU upgrade.

Could work, but honestly I don't know if I would go for a board like that... Especially being you are going to take a dive in ram performance right off the bat.

Is the dive in ram performance the only reason against getting this board?
Wouldn't you recommend it?
I like the sound of a Core 2 Duo + 2gb ddr400 more than a Pentium D + 2gb ddr333 :)
