ASUS P5E3 Deluxe Ships With Embedded Linux, Firefox, and Skype

The ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard, which is based on the X38 chipset, is planned to ship with an embedded Linux operating system called SplashTop. SplashTop is an instant-on Linux desktop being created by DeviceVM and will be launching in a few more days on October 10. The OS has a quick boot up time of only 5 seconds. Once fully booted, users can enjoy instant access to commonly used functions such as browsing the internet on Firefox and talking on Skype VoIP.

Sounds sweet, but if I got a top end mobo like this, I'd like to do more than browsing the net and using VoIP

I like this idea. I don't always turn on my computer with the intention of gaming, so having the ability to just surf the web could come in handy.

I have to say, Im impressed by Asus and what not. Embedded software like this is a nice option to have and it gets you up and going with no worries. Mundane tasks to be sure, but its a nice little twist to a MOBO. Id like to see more offered, even in the AMD camp.

That is very interesting, I'd have to try it to see if it is what I believe it is from that article, or if it's something more. Definately very cool, and I can see this becoming standard implementation maybe to use a low power mode when not wanting to do more than basic stuff like wordpad, surfing, tunes, and when wanting to game or heavily load the system, full boot to XP.

This should be the wave of the future and should cut down on piracy. Wonder if we will ever see MS take this idea seriously. IE no more DVDs, all OSs are now on chip.

I hardly ever even turn off my PC. I set it to sleep mode, and when I hit the power button, I get fully functional Windows Vista in 1 second.

Intel already has Robinson (flash on a chip on the mobo). Probably Asus taking an idea from the Intel camp. It'd be nice to see if you could load Windows onto this chip then use the hard drive for games and such.

This is also a way to get people to try other software besides the usual microsoft offerings. Besides obviously being cheaper, it's clever marketing as you will IMO.
