the game crashes. i think its because the level counter past 29 just increases the store by 1 and causes some funky business later on.

Tend to agree with you there. Most games will show something at the end if you beat it, except for some very old classic arcade games where i'v'e seen user(s) clock it, ie return the score back to zero.

Doesn't Donkey Kong do that actually once you hit a certain score it cycles back thru again?

First time? Isn't this more like first time reported on the interwebs or you're telling me no one "beat it" in the last 40 odd years

I don't know about Donkey Kong. Space Invaders was to commonly clocked. But when you see someone clock "Williams Defender" it's amazing.

The only way they knew the game even has a possible end is setting a computer against it that always resulted in it crashing.

I mean if thats the limitation of the game then I guess it counts as beating it no? 'at least to me yes'
I also had no idea that this was a thing in Tetris, only played the handheld versions when I was a kid but I don't think that I ever managed to get far.

The term "beat" is used because it reaches an end. If there is an end, and you reach it, you "beat" it. The end happens when a value exceeds its container and overflows into neighboring data. That's why the game freezes and the level number glitches out.

This is true, most NES and beyond games do have an ending of some sort, but that particular mode in Tetris has no end. When the level, line and score counters reach a certain limit they start over-writing parts of the game code, after that point the game has a limited time before hard-code crashing. Even a hitting the reset button does always correct the problem. The NES needs to be powered off to recover.

He's 13.
He's just accomplished something technically beyond any adult efforts.
Given both of the above I feel your critique unwarranted.

What he's done is not being critized. It's a hell of a thing for sure! What is being critized is the click-bait crap of saying that he "beat the game", which is absolute moose-muffins!! The game crashed, and after reaching a certain point, it will do so randomly. That is NOT victory, it's just reaching the point where the game crashes. No one can avoid it, not even AI machine players. It's a hard-code limitation of the game and NES hardware.

The game designers NEVER expected, envisioned or believed getting so far into the game like that was possible, so they never coded a proper routine to handle the game pushing beyond the limits of the machine. Had they expected it, they would have coded in instructions for the system to handle things better.

Funny I saw this video yesterday. It's almost like a google algorithm is at play and we are the Tetris blocks.

There would appear to have been a lot of building attention towards this game resulting in a second someone so near to WINNING being inspired to repeat the accomplishment.

Apparently, the crash generally happens after around 1550 lines are cleared. It seems to have something to do with how the line counter adds points to the score.

This player had the crash happen on level 157 at 1511 lines.

Here's an article that goes into exhaustive detail on how the game works. I'm sure someone much smarter than me could make more sense of it.

It also sounds like it's possible to avoid crashing, maybe by only clearing certain amounts of lines at a time on certain levels? Anyway, once you pass level 255, the counter overflows back to 0 and the color palette resets.

It was my understanding this other person did win too because they did get the game to crash as well.
