Hight temp on idle(65-70°C) or just normal ? 7800x3d + 360mm aio

Hi All ,

I just build a new system with a ryzen 7 7800x3d and a cooler corsair h150i 360mm and my idle temps are the same as when i play games , they around 60°C and 70°C degrees Celsius which for me seems a bit high for just being browsing for example. For gaming temps are the same , i saw for PUBG max 79°C and normally is around 65°C and 70°C but while doing nothing or maybe just like browsing at the internet the temps are the same ( now for example at the time im writing the temps are 67°C ) and this is whit the corsair cooler at max speed , if put it at minimum speeds temps are very similar as well but a bit high , like 3 or 6 degrees more .

The case flow is 3 front 120mm fan air in , two 140mm bottoms air in , one 140mm back air out and the corsair cooler sending air out from the top.

I re applied 3 times the thermal paste ( Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut) and the 3 times the same behavior.

Is this normal or something isn't good with my build ( maybe the cooler is failing , doesnt seem from what i see at Corsair ICUE) ?

Thank you very much in advance!

Max. Operating Temperature (Tjmax) 89°C. You are good.

The non-x3d is 95c.

Edit: I didn't see that those were idle temps.

No consumer CPU should be idling at those temperatures under a 360mm AIO.

The likely culprits are:

  • improperly mounted or tightened waterblock
  • improperly applied thermal paste (too little, too much, unevenly spread)
  • protective plastic sticker not removed from waterblock

It's possible that it could be a combination of some or all of the above. It could be something else. Fairly recently, someone else here had a similar issue with a 280mm AIO (which roughly has the same cooling capacity as a 360mm AIO) so this is a fairly frequent occurrence.

The fact that your gaming temperatures are the same as your idle temperatures also points to an improperly mounted AIO.

Remove the waterblock, inspect, repaste and try again. If that doesn't work, have a local PC repair shop or someone more dextrous do the work.

Best of luck.

That or there air trapped in the pump. Or the pump isnt spinning.

If the pump isn't spinning, the CPU will redline in a couple of minutes at idle. It's not that, OP is gaming at the same temps.

Holy smokes, those idle temps are off the charts ! Im using the same cpu and aio, and idle at 35-40c.

Im thinking you might either be screwing it too tight, or not tight enough - i know it's super hard to tell, as corsairs amd bracket is quite bad, with no points that shows you when you have screwed it in the correct amount.

Or it could be your method of tim application possibly not giving sufficient coverage, or possibly airbubbles.

Or it could be a defective pump in your aio.

Load up iQue from Corsair and set the pump to Extreme.

The only Corair AIO's I have played with are all old models, except my sons, and I just did what I would do with this old one. Ran the nuts down to the bottom, hand tight, then a quarter turn.. Personally, I think people baby their computer parts to much. I remember have to put a sping loaded monster onto my 486 DX4 100, NO IHS on those, one slip up and your CPU went bye bye.. With these IHS, pfft.. set it on, run the screws down.. give it a little twist..

Then it has to have an air bubble trapped in it.
An air bubble in the AIO loop will not cause a +20°C increase in idle temperature. The liquid coolant will flow past the air bubble anyhow.

And the air bubbles would quickly work their way to the top-mounted radiator in minutes.

I have a Ryzen 5800X + Arctic Liquid Freezer 360mm AIO idling at 25°C right now (radiator fans at 550 rpm). Even if the 7800X3D draws a little more power, it still should be idling around 30-40°C.

That's the issue, you can't do that with this cooler - you will completely bend the bracket if you try to screw it all the way down.

Yeah.. he did say that didnt he.. It does sound like there is a peel before use sticker or a plastic ring around his cooler base.

Hi All ,

Thank you very much for all your answers and recommendations! Like i said is the third time re installing the cooler , i always put like a drop of water , no more than that , probably little less i can say. Isnt my first time building a pc , but just for the sake of trying i will use the plastic mini spatula that comes with the thermal paste and distribute the paste on the cpu and see if that helps. Or maybe im just screwing it to tight , im one of those person that tries to tighten the screws as much as possible but hard to tell if thats good or not .

The water block had a plastic cover on it , i removed that one and also removed the thermal past that came pre applied and put the Hydronaout

Either way i will try one more time distributing the thermal paste and see what happens , weird thing for me is that the temps are the same not matter what i do , one would thing that while gaming temps should be a lot higher

As several other 7X3D owners have said, definitely not normal temps. I'm getting high 20s/low 30s °C during idle with just a regular degular dual 120 tower cooler. You could try tilting the PC side to side ~45° while it's on, if there are any air bubbles stuck somewhere, that can help dislodge them. Helped me massively when I did a hardline build. I'd also verify that the pump is indeed pumping, i.e. gently holding/squeezing the tubing to feel whether it feels like liquid is moving through them. I've seen it before where AIOs have been "all wired up" just for the pump block header not to be connected, thus leaving only the fans spinning. Even more deceptive when the block's RGB was hooked up and working :D

Im willing to bet that's the issue. One little drop is very unlikely to be evenly spread across the entire heatspreader.

I find what works best is first spreading a layer across the entire heatspreader, and then afterwards place a pea sized drop in the middle - it should ensure there is full coverage and no airbubbles :)

I used to be the same and I too sometimes had issues, so now I tighten them as tight as they will go (without forcing them) and then when I have done them all, release each one half a turn of my screwdriver, no issues since.

weird thing for me is that the temps are the same not matter what i do

I have ZERO experience with AIOs, but i thought of something: could it be the temp reader reporting wrong temps?

You didn't mention how you got the temps reading: BIOS? HWinfo? Other?

If you're certain your mount is gtg it's time to seriously consider replacing that aio. Pump may be dead or dieing. It may be clogged up.
Can you feel or hear the pump running?
Does one of the tubes coming off of the block feel excessively hot to the touch?
Is it connected to the pump header on your mb?
