AMD Quad FX Canceled

I think that the Quad FX project had some serious potential, but was really hurt by a lot of things.

A- The only CPUs that came out for Socket F were the FX-series things. If there were some budget offerings, then we might have seen better adoption of Socket F.

B- AMD made no indication that they were moving everything to Socket F, which would have pushed everyone to Socket F.

C- Socket F motherboards, especially dual-socket F motherboards, were expensive. If there were budget offerings, Socket F would be just like Socket AM2.

D- There was nothing really special about Socket F, other than it was unique, and allowed you to stick two dual-core CPUs in. And it was more expensive to do than just get a better-performing Intel Q6600 and P35 motherboard.

I disagree, it was a failure ever since some guy at AMD made it up, just like Skulltrail. It's more like some collectible than a serious platform. You could just buy dual Opterons for the same price which offer the same features and performance. So why bother with quad FX?

All of this was anticipated. The DSDC never really took off. It was just a hasty reply to the Intel Quad-core CPUs vis-à-vis Intel rolling out the Pentium-4 EE to face the Athlon64 onslaught. Many nicknamed the P4 EE as a "emergency edition" back then. The DSDC based Athlon64 FX 7x processors are no different and didn't really perform 2x as fast as a single Athon64 X2 6000+ (which has the same specs as that of a single chip of the FX 74). So to remake the Agena core into LGA 1207 would be an expensive affair for AMD considering there would be very few takers for it, being in the enthusiast segment. Whatever happened to the tall promises AMD made to the people who newly bought the FX-74 and that ASUS. "Provides a seamless upgrade path for future quad-core processors for a 8 core processing powerhouse".

Yeah right!!

This may make you think that AMD wont do anymore of the superhyped bullshit claims filled wih PR decorated vague overwhelming predictions brought forward as facts about how their DIDLYDONS8 platform is going to revolutionize the enthusiasts' world and knock their socks off into the moon at the same time. Right? ..... Wrong they are doing it again with the Spider platform. It's not just AMD though nVIDIA did the same thing with Quad SLI.

Because now you see how their QuadFather platform or what they decided to call it later FASN8 (oh my god ! what a lame name) is down the drain.

But to be honst both these craptastic platforms have their proper usage and that is filling the media outlets (those with general target audience like MSN) with promotional videos to win mindshares and to make themselves look like they are on the leading edge to fool their current shareholders and try to keep them loyal and possibly trick uninformed people to buy new shares and invest in the so pictured successful company.

Its just there to act as a temp shot in the arm whenever they think they need one and thats when they feel they are left behind the competition pretty badly, shouldnt really take them seriously even if they come up with another one named BBQFN8$WTF8.

These are just mouthfiller PR grout platfoms, you should really check the spider platform promotional videos on MSN and similar websites. These kind of platforms have pretty short life-span and will EXP as soon as the PR purpose they were created for is fullfield. Any kind of support to work with future CPUs/Mobos/OSs/games/etc. will simply get the axe, quad sli anyone?
