Extremly strange setup issue

Well, I was doing a repair installation on a windows xp home computer, and encountered an issue where the setup freezes on 27 minutes remaining? It's "Deleting files". Never before have I seen this one. Any ideas guys?

Edit:

I thought I might add, that the loading bar completely stops, but I can still turn num lock on and off. And the mouse moves of course.

If it's important enough, I would just let it sit. I've had some installs that hang for periods of time at different parts.
Just last week I had a hang up with a vista installation.

If you have time, start all over again.

EDIT: Might be the hard drive. Did you do a full format on that partition during install? A full format formats, then runs chkdsk.

Well, I left it going all night and still no movement. I did do a chkdsk though, no luck. Gah, this is so bad. lol. It actually stops now at 26 minutes instead, when it's copying files... weird.

Next thing I'd say was a bad disk.

when doing a "repair" install it can "hang" if windows has missing files or is too corrupted to repair itself.

looks like you need a format and fresh install :(

NO! Format is not an option  There must be a way around it surely. I tried to do a repair again and it's stuck at 27 minutes.

EDIT: ON Performing configuration this time.

How will fixing his MBR make the recovery work?

On a similar note involving the MBR, is it possible to move said MBR off of one drive, and put it on another, then make the bios look at that drive first?

I have Vista on a small 40GB partition, and during one of my reinstalls of XP, windows decided to put the MBR on that 40GB partition. So now my XP installation relies on the Vista partition just to boot.

I have my XP disk and I've used the recovery console before hand, but I didn't know about the fixmbr command

Please do a memcheck. I could not install WINXP on a rig because I had bad memory. I am almost 60% sure it is the mem. Please try pulling out one stick, and then see if it installs and visa versa.

if you have to save the data on the disk then put that drive in another computer to recover its data to put on disk or a backup drive, then use a disk utility to check it, if it checks out ok then reinstall it in your computer, reformat and do fresh install of windows and then just transfer all the data back onto the disk.

copying the data would be so much easier if you had an external backup drive, everyone should get one because they are a life saver for using at times like this.

I've had this happen to me before also. Usually it is not a hardware problem.
When trying to repair things get corrupted.
Get any data you must save off the disk using other methods and then wipe the disk and do a clean install.
