Hey guys, I just got a laptop with HDMI out and I hooked it up to my HDTV and for some reason the sound doesnt go through. I just unplugged my DVD player and used that hdmi to put into my laptop. very odd. I can hear the sound on the laptop only. Laptop is a hp pavillion dv9000. I've tried it with movie dvd's and other mpeg videos. Any help would rock. thanks!

HDMI is meant to combine the two.
What laptop did you get? I bought an XPS m1330 a while back, has HDMI, and even has seperate audio deice for HDMI, so, although I haven't tried it yet (HDMI cables are too damned expensive still), I'm hoping it'll work just fine, with sound and good image, sos I can geek it up at my brother's house, on his big TV.

hp pavillion dv9000 is the laptop I have. So what kinda audio device thats seperate do you have on yours?
thanks in advance.

p.s you dont have to buy "monster" cables to buy HDMI and believe me you can get cheap hdmi cables for like 15 bucks and they work fine.

Well probably because either you have nvidia dedicated graphics or intel integrated graphics. In the DESKTOP segment only ati has onboard sound (so it can pass sound through the the tv too), nvidia and intel don't. So I don't see why intel or nvidia would be able to pass through sound in a laptop and maybe not ati either.

Well, I plugged the HDMI cable into it and into my TV and bang there was my desktop in 40" but when I went to play a video there was no sound, only coming from the laptop.
Why the heck would they put an HDMI output or input on a laptop if it didnt utilize both video and sound?

It's really funny ya know, laptops seem to be like mattresses , you cant find the same one anywhere. I have a hp pavillion dv9000 and when you look it up , you find the 9000t and x and all this stuff and its not mine entirely. It says it's supposed to have a HD dvd in it but it doesn't The HD is supposed to be on the most expensive model, which I'm assuming is the 9000t, but that model has an nvidia 8600 m video card in it. Well thats my video card, and I have the 1200 dollar dv9000 model. I also have the 320mb version. C/W Vista ultimate. Dont get me wrong I love it, but it's very confusing figuring out what model you have.

Because it's a straight link from the video card to the hdmi port. It would be hard to sync the graphics and audio into one port from a video card and a different sound card. That's why ati's desktop models have the sound on the graphics card for the hdmi.
