My friend asked me to select parts for him so he can build a comp, and I was wondering if all of this stuff matches up okay, I wouldnt want him buying the wrong components for the wrong parts. I havent paid much attention to computers in awhile but I think these parts will work together okay...

Do those components seem okay? I wouldn't want to pick anything that is not compatible.

You need a 780i board to run those cards together.

Why? The 3870's performance is currently inferior, and they are the same price.

Two HD 3870's beat two 8800GT's cause crossfire scales a hella lot beter

Take away one of the video cards and use that money for a better hard drive and mobo. At least get a P35 and a bigger hard drive. The hard drives in the 60-110 dollar range are the best bang for your buck.

Here's a good one:

He'll use and need the space A LOT more than a second video card.

Woops haha, I meant 680i XD. But yeah either of those three would work.

 ahh thats good, for the Nvidia side of things I really liked the 680. But it still wasnt good enough to bring me to that side, I just have to stick intel(I just love to OC the hell out of my proc)

The fact that you wish to get 2 8800GT's would say to me that your friend is a gamer am I right?

First thing would be to upgrade to bigger HDD and switch to a WD one as they perform better and are cheaper (and quieter apparantly)

Second, If you want a dual GPU setup... definately go for crossfire.. it does scale much better than Nvidia SLI, Nvidia are better for single card setups not SLI... or wait for the ATI HD3870X2... it is 2 GPUs in one and is set to be out sometime in the first term of this year

If you want a dual card setup, go get an Intel X38 board for crossfire or a 780i for Nvidia, if you want max performance to completely utalise the cards to their full ability. Just beware of the 680i... there have been a lot of problems and they do run very hot but you should be OK if you want to save a few bucks. if you decide to go for a single card setup.... go for the Intel P35 chipset

I'm no expert on the topic as well but I always thought that Xeon processors were designed for servers.... just what I have heard

I suppose it all depends on budget but the main things are upgrading the HDD (or get a 2 of them) and reconsidering your GPU setup and Mobo

I agree here completely. I think its a great idea to go with a 3870 or even the 3870x2 when its released. And by going with a intel chipset(x38,p35) you will have great stability and oxcellent options for overclocking. Now if you go crossfire be sure to go x38 because you need the full 16x on the 2nd PCIe slot. If you go p35 then go single card, or a 3870x2. The xeons are nice, they have a higher temp threshold and they overclock alittle better. I have a q6600 G0 and Im up to 3.8 with no complaints. I think its just the Kentsfield's that rule! and again, go with the WD 500AAKS its a great HD

a p35 wont work with SLI

Yea, that was assuming he would drop the other video card for a better mobo and hard drive.

WD has never failed me and I've had my eyes on that drive for quite a while now... Glad to know they're reliable!

I know what you mean... i was going to get 2 of them myself but I'm in Australia sn things are more expensive here so the money just didn't justify the performance.

I am also not a huge fan of the Nvidia chipsets, I prefer the Intel ones and since Nvidia has exclusive rights to SLI, I decided to go with the Intel P35 chipset.

I was just throwing in some opinions but just know that 80Gb is not much and after formatting and windows, you will have around 60GB left... just something to think about

Glad I could be of help

Also, I think you should go witht he Q6600 processor rather than the Xeon. I've been doing some looking around and I don't think that CPU is actually compatable. It says it gives better performance in "servers" not desktops and from what I have been reading, it actually gives less performance in desktops.

I'm not 100% sureon this but I think you should consider changing because the Xeons are not designed for desktop computers... the Q6600 is a damn good processor and it's just a bit cheaper than the Xeon

Well I wish more TPU users would chime in on this, I thought the same thing, and that instance on newegg was really a fluke, almost every TPU user that Ive talked to about this subject says that the xeons are totally compatible. I guess one way to go about is talk to some users that have it. Ill look around and see what I can dig up

Definitely want quad core? Will he settle with dual core?

And the quad is definitly the way to go, more and more apps are being written to use multi-threading and going with a dual core is just wasting money, cause you will be buying a quad within the end of the year.

EDIT ** Its the way of the future, might as well jump in now
