ok i have $190 to spend at the very least for a videocard assuming i don't use my dell gift cards to get a ps3 and cod4. the purpose of the videocard if i get it is to game cod4 really. the only other games i think ill play is cs1.6, upcoming starcraft 2, and prob some need for speed. i run on a 1680x1050 resolution and wanted to see ya'll's opinions on what videocard to get. i have $190 to spend as of right now. theres the hd3850, 8800gs, 8800gt, 9600gt to choose from and they all look promising according to many reviews like from tomshardware, so i want to see which one is best for me and if its worth the $20ish price difference. i currently have a 128mb hd2400 pro that runs cod4 demo with no antialiasing at 1680x1050 @ around 30fps.

I am amazed that a 2400 Pro runs it even at that speed. Seriously, all those cards are great -- get whatever you want, though I think a good 8800GT (with 512mb) might be quite a bit more than $190.

yeah im willing to spend a lil more if its worth it. leaning on the hd3850 or 9600gt because the 8800gs is said to be really noisy.

I would say the 3850, you can put it in hybrid crossfire with a 3870 or a future ati card later and get some very good performance

The HD's have been out a while longer and don't have any driver issues. Because of that I wouldn't recommend a 9600 just yet. If you wanna wait a couple weeks til nVidia actually releases their next driver it'd be a good bet. For right this second tho, you can get a 3870 for 190$

ATi just cut the prices on the HD3870. Plus, C.O.D. 4 plays really well with 3870's. Price/performance with what you have and what you do, it would be the card you want. I would also recommend using two matching sticks of at least DDR2800. Running three sticks which I assume you are doing doesn't allow the memory to run in dual channel and you are taking a performance hit.

I really hate sticking up for Nvidia here, but actually the 8800gs is supposedly one of the quietest cards that's ever been tested on a lot of reviews I've seen recently...

But seriously -- look at how some of the games perform. If COD runs better with an ATI (I think it does), make sure and get a 3870, you can't beat the price right now.

sell your old video card if you can, that will give you extra funds, if you dont mind waiting, than you should easily be able to afford an 8800gt or 3870

like mdm said just figure out what runs the games you play the best by looking at reviews.

Crysis

If you want the one that will probably run Crysis the best I heard that the 9600 GT was built around Crysis. I bought one from Tiger yesterday for $200.

if you oc, i would recommend an 2900pro, there cheap and it oc very nicely (look at mein, its insane, its te same as an xt just clocked lower) i believe i get around 60 fps min, if you want to go nvidia get a 9600 , but the 3870's have got a nice price cut and they are great cards

no 512's left in the retail chain .. jsut 256's i heard they react differently to o/c's and then it also depends on his PSU
