With relation to the time period, Valve Source engine. Half Life 2 pwned with superb physics, water effects, shadows, textures, lighting, etc. It only got better with suceeding episodes using HDR effects.

Unreal Tournament 3 (Unreal Warfare Engine 3.0) get used to it because alot of developers for the console licensed this engine.

I think Mass Effect had some of the best graphics, especially when you got a close-up of the characters then you could really see the detail.

HL2: LC is more of a technology demo than a level...though it brings in the element of vertical combat which HL2 didn't have. Situationally it is meant to take place between Highway 17 and Sandtraps.

imho Half-Life 2: Episode Two is just amazing. Not only do the environments look great but the facial expressions of the characters is awesome. The water looks great too with full reflections. Also its greatly optimized, I can play it with 4x AA + 16x ASF with 120+ FPS

It's kind of stupid to not let people say Crysis. It technically has the best graphics of any game. period.

im going with half life due to what the engine has offered gaming, and ep2 looked AWESOME, after that though it would go to the unreal engine
