i was also trying to buy q9450 but decided in favor of q6600 coz i would be paying around 130 $ more for around 10-15 % increase in performance . This doesn't justify the purchase .

i had the exact same issue, an di just bought another q6600, i couldnt be stuffed waiting foe the q9450 and paying the extra $$$$, also if you are a OCer u will need a good mobo wich can push out a high fsb say 500 or so to get a good OC out of the q9450 because of its 8X multiplyer

I dont see just because the 9450 has an 8x multi that its going to oc any different than a Q6600 with an 8x multi (i know 9x is deafult on a Q6600)

I understand your point and it's a good one, however....IMO, with an 8 x multi on a quad it is very unlikely you will exceed 3.8gig and dependant on motherboard probably more likely 3.7gig, now that is about the equivilent to 3.8gig on a Q6600 (the extra L2 Cache helps on the 9450). Now most Q6600 will do 3.8gig, and some more, the 9 x multi makes them less FSB limited (there are not that many boards that will clock a quad beyond around 470FSB and quite a lot that wont acheive even that), at idle and low overclocks the Q9450 is going to run cooler on less volts, at high overclocks it will run just as hot from what I have read (a lot), remember, even thgough it's 45nm it has the same TDP rating as the Q6600 at 95W.

In my opinion (no hard fact here), why spend a lot more on a chip thats going to give you at best, no greater performance (probably).........however, if you only do mild (ish) overclocks and are happy to run 24/7 and bench at say 3.4 or 3.5gig then perhaps the Q9450 might be the better option......just my thoughts.

Just like rampage said, I would also go for the Q6600, the asking price for the Q9450 is too much to justify its perf. increase.

And the Q6600's x9 multi will surely help you with overclocking. Assume you have good cooling and your motherboard is capable of taking quad cores to 400fsb. At that same fsb, the 6600 will be clocked at a chill 400mhz faster than the 9450, ousting the 9450. And preliminary bios support for 45nm quads will have their share of bugs that are gonna plague oc'ing adventures.

see thats exactly why I went with the q6700 instead of waiting. on stock cooling it hits 3.65GHZ on a cheap mobo. and it's got to be the cheapest 10x mult quad on the market.

If you want a CPU now, get the Q6600 G0.

If you are ready to wait until the first price drop of the Q9450, then get the Q9450. But only get it if your mb can do FSB 1600. If your mb is designed for 1333 then you will probably hit a FSB wall faster with the Q9450 than the Q6600.

SSE4.1 is worth it if you do encoding work. e.g. rip movies. Big performance improvement, if codec designed to use these instructions.

Extra cache is good at 12MB and will help some tasks a lot, but most, not at all. However, regular cache is faster/more efficient. It is supposed to add approx 5% clock-for-clock performance for the typical application.

Next month the Q6700 drops price significantly. Your question is therefore Q6700 vs. Q9450. The stocks are the same. Tricky.

My motherboard will support 1600fsb so thats no issue.

Also, whats the chance of getting a G0 from newegg?

no its not worth it , only divx supports sse4.1 and its inferior in quality to xvid and a lot inferior to h.264 .

about to order the Q6600, i just hope i don't regret not buying the q9450.

The q9550 is way to much, i vowed never to buy a extreme proc and my E4300 isn't going to play nice with my crossfire tomorrow.

I really want to go pick it up today from a local shop, but there all 300+

Well Q6600 for $275
or Q9450 for $376

the extra $100 isn't appealing.

CrAsHnBuRnXp whats your max oc?

Wait for the price drop. I had a q6600 G0 SLACR and I went back to my e8400 due to:

- 300w load at 3.5ghz
- over 70c prime load on good air
- Bottlenecks high GFX's

It is a primitive processor.

Microcenter had the Q9450 for 300 + TAX, you should check if the deal is still there.

That's where I got my Q9450.

Speaking of Microcenter, they still have the Q6600 G0 for $199 & that was not just in-store anymore even though it says that on the site. They killed deal online but b4 they did that I already bought 2 of them...1 in-store & 1 online :D
