In an interview with GamesIndustry, NVIDIA said that it is looking to simplify its gaming product range in order to appeal to a wider audience. Speaking to GamesIndustry, Roy Taylor, VP of Content Business Development, admitted that NVIDIA's current range of products is overcomplicated and too confusing for users that may not follow the graphics market like we computer related people do. "It is a challenge that we're looking at right now. There is a need to simplify it for consumers, there's no question," Taylor explained. "We think that the people who understand and know GeForce today, they're okay with it - they understand it. But if we're going to widen our appeal, there's no doubt that we have to solve that problem," he added. Specific plans of how NVIDIA is intending to remodel its product line were not disclosed during the small talk.

To me it sounds more like changing the name of their cards to NVIDIA1, NVIDIA2, NVIDIA3 for example. You buy NVIDIA3 and you're above all, it's as simple as that. :)

And if nVidia continues with their insane current naming scheme, then we'll have NVIDIA4, NVIDIA 5 and NVIDIA6 to look forward to, in the following hours! ;)

Hopefully they'll just make it simple - make an Nvidia exclusive benchmark and say ' the 8800GT is 23% faster than the 8800GS. they have the same media features and outputs' and keep it simple like that. (a little comparison chart would be nice)

Amazing how it takes a multi-million dollar business so long to see the obvious product confusion that we have all been complaining about. (nVidia is worse than ATi but ATI isnt a lot better IMO).

PR and marketing teams should fall on swords.

IMHO, ATI is far from perfect but seems to be a LOT better, for now.

Example (i'm not referring to brands):

How many different models are of 3870, 3850 and 3870x2?

How many different models are of 8600, 8800, 9600, 9800?

Answer these 2 questions and the result will be obvious ...

Sounds to me like a marketing strategy to either increase or keep sales.

This is not somthing I expected from Nvidia. And I am quite displeased to hear.

If end users don't want to learn about computers and hardware, then too ******* bad. It's time we stop hindering designers and developers because we're too lazy to educate ourselves as consumers.

The strategy is clear:

1./ The more products you release, the more web forums, like TPU, report "NEWS". That's how web-advertising companies get paid... but the amount of times the news is posted.

2./ Product confusion in the retail store. You've heard so much about the expensive models in the press you buy something at a lower price, but have no idea how much you are getting ripped off for the lower performance.

This is not as easy as one would think.
There are various factors that can make a card "better".
Is pure FPS better than a given feature?
For instance, when they made the jump from dx9 to dx10, not all of the dx10 cards were faster than the dx9 ones, yet they had to change the naming to denote the dx10 feature.
Newconroer is right, no matter how they name the cards, if you do not do your homework you are not going to get what you want.

yeah but if they do it like this:

DX9 performance
DX10 performance
(compared to some static item: lets say they use their onboard version of each generation)

Then after that, its a feature checklist that MAKES SENSE (not marketing speak, but stuff thats usual - amount of ports/type, single or dual slot cooling, length, decoding features, and so on)

I think they should go back to the old school naming schemes and drop some of the numbers, then add a tag that normal people could understand. Something Like this
9800gtx = Geforce 9 Platinum
9800gt = Geforce 9 Gold (when it arrives)
9600gt = Geforce 9 Silver
9600gso = Geforce 9 Bronze
etc.

Incorrect. The 9600gt 512mb is better unless you compare it to the 9600GSO that has more than 512mb. But then there is plenty of 9600gt 1GB models that do much better.

Also remember the 9600gt is better in SLI.;)
