Entry level gaming card?

My little bro is looking to build a new machine here... Doesn't play too many games but wants something eh not so bad, he is running a 1300pro right now and its a little slow.

Looking at
HD3450/2600xt gddr4/3650/8500/8600

Something in there, how are the 3450/3650/8500s compare?
Application, not 3dmark.....

Plays cod4 and may get into Wow here...

Go for the 8600 GT at least, their price is on the fall, for a little more, you can get the 8600 (rev A2) GTS with 256-bit memory bus.

Thats what I was thinking myself... I was trying to get him to get a 3850 or 8800gs but he doesn't want to get something like that...

Didn't even think to look at that, and for the price of a Rev2 8600gts, might as well get a 3850 or 8800 and smoke it... :-/

I would go either the 8600GT or the 2600XT GDDR4. I've read ppl saying that the 2600XT with that GDDR4 is better than the 8600GT, is that true or?

Eh, not really, they compare at stock speeds but when clocked the 8600 is taking the lead since some good driver releases.

The arguemnt originally was that the 2600xt gddr4 was faster than the 8600gt in dx10.

Not to doubt, but the cheapest 256bit 8600gts I found was $140 and for that you can get a 512mb 3850 or a 8800GS or almost a 512mb 8800GT which it doesn't compare to....

The 8800GS is pretty good. It's a bit weaker than the 9600GT, but also only 100 bucks.

My 2 cents:

Spend the extra 20$-60$ for the 9600GT. The 9600GT is a great card that will last you a little be longer than the older 8-series cards. For an entry level card, you can't really beat the price.

For $100 the 8800GS can't really be beat Price to Performance wise, if you want to spend a little more then the 9600GT is also a great buy. If you are looking for less than $100, then the 8600GT is the way to go.

If you don't mind rebates, it is only $30. Not bad, especially just to hold him over for another year and a half or so.

I am not sure if your want to go with that "low" of a card, but if it keeps him happy, it is a great value.

if you can get it under 100 id go for it but if he has 100 to spend get a 9600 bounds better....but the 8600 isnt a card to laugh at not at all

I got a PNY 9600 GT on Ebay for $135.

But the f#cking UPS are gonna sent it back because i was not at home for a few days.
They also said it was 2 day shipping, what i payed for. In the end it took 6 days before they tried to offer the card the fist time.:shadedshu

That sucks..... Ya I might even toss him the few bucks to get him into something a bit faster... He really wants to play Vegas:2 also, so he will need a bit of punch to play with anything decent looking.

ive got a overclocked 8600GTS and im very happy with it .. will play anygame at highest settings and 1024x768 exept from maybe crysis .. and on older games like cod4 u can play on highest settings but on 1280x1024 with no fps probs but if your looking for like 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 then go for at least a 9600. but i like the 8600GTS the most seeing as its price is very good and it performs very well.

I have a MSI RX 2600 XT Silent in my rig atm.
Got it back from rma. Sucked because i wanted credit instead of a card. Hehe.
But now i can use it as a backup card. Btw the 8800 GTS 320 is also very cheap now.
