I would say that the X-fire 3870's would out perform the 3870x2.

If you're planning for either (be it 2x HD3870 or HD3870 x2), you have to change that motherboard of yours. If I remember correctly, the PCI-E x16 slot is electrically x8 on an NF-M2S.

1./ 3870x2 is GDDR3
2./ 2x 3870 is GDDR4

Set clocks on 2x 3870 to be same as 3870x2 (which is overclocked) and the result is faster than the 3870x2. BUT, 2x 3870 uses more power and requires 2 slots.

PCIex8 is NOT A PROBLEM. In theory there is less bandwidth. In practice, there is still enough. An AGP 3850 is *not* slower than a PCIex16 3850, and PCIe8 is still better than AGP.

My preference, even though its a bit slower with GDDR3, is to go for the 3870x2. Simpler set up. More room left in case for airflow.

BUT, if you didnt buy yet, then DONT. The 4870 is the one to go for now.

they are pushed back to august what does he do for two months. The 3870x2 cards can be had on ebay for less than 300.00 and will be plenty powerful for the next year or more.

The Asus X38/X48 boards are very nice, especially the Maximus and the Rampage Formula's. The bios can be quite complicated, but there are many very good support threads out there that will take you where you need to go! There is always DFI if they are available where you live.:toast:
