Gamestop to Stop Selling Zunes

-----

Microsoft is in for more bad news regarding its Zune personal music players, as GameStop on Thursday announced it decided to stop selling the flash-memory digital music player in its stores. The video-game retailer said lack of consumer demand and the device's ill fit with its existing offerings prompted the decision, which was made about a month ago. The retail chain is made up of hundreds of stores across the US, and will not order new stock, clearing out existing inventory exclusively on its web store.

Doesn't surprise me in the least bit; I've yet to meet a single person who owns one of these.

Not a big deal, they never started selling ipods. Digital music players just don't fit in a game store, people don't go there expecting to buy them.

I do own two Zunes(30GB and 80GB), and I love them. They are actually really good players, better than my iPod Classic even, the name just needs to grow.

*Cough* The market share needs to grow (tremendously) as well.

Since Nov. 2006, Zune has sold about 2 million players.

Since Nov. 2006, Apple has sold 85 million iPods (not including iPhones).

That's not because Apple's iPods are better than the Zune; it's because there's a snob factor to owning an iPod and iPhone. and everywhere on TV they are waving iPods and iPhones around like anyone can afford them... =/ Apple has corrupted us all.

I never said they are better. Additionally iPods be it a shuffle, a nano, a classic, or the new models are all very well priced. However I will say it's not about a snob factor; that's just what you see. (I'm sure there are a percentage of owners who are snobs, but that can be said for any product)

iPod Shuffle = 49$
iPod Nano = 149$
iPod Classic= 249$
iPod Touch= 299$
iPhone 8gb= 399$
iPhone 16gb= 499$

I think anyone can afford an iPod.

Those Halo models they had.

@cdawall: The point wasn't to say "hey, my mp3 player is better than yours" becuase its cheaper and has different comparable features blah blah...It was to show that they are affordable. Too bad the companies you mentioned have poor marketing in comparison to Apple and Microsoft.

they offer the same feature

zen has video+mp3/wma playback
nano has video+mp3/AAC playback

both have a shitty way to load files to them but with the creative you cna bypass that and use WMP :D

they are affordable but for the price they are CRAP

I think anyone can afford an iPod.

It isn't about price, the 1GB Shuffle starts at $49, but there are 1GB players with screens that are cheaper, there are even 2GB players available for $35 from reputable companies. The problem is they don't have the iPod name on them, so they won't sell nearly as well.

The 4GB nano is $149, but Sandisk offers a 4GB player similar to the nano for $69, and it has an SD expansion slot to add even more storage capacity, but again it isn't an iPod so it won't sell nearly as well. Even the 4GB zune is only $119. The iPods tend to be overpriced for what you are getting, but people still buy them like crazy.

The list goes on with all the price points and version of the iPod, there is almost always a better alternative out there for the price, but people don't want better alternatives, they want iPods. It is amazing how many people still believe iPods are the only portable MP3 player out there.

It all comes down to the fact that the iPod is drastically more well known than any other player, and that is why it will continue to outsell every other player.

Good move on Gamestop's part. There's no way they could be competitive with Walmart, BestBuy, etc. Inventory=$$.

Exactly, there are many players out there that are cheaper, and better than the iPods.

The iPods are more a fashion accessory than a decent media device.

Even the old iRivers are far superior, and not just in the number of formats they support, but in sound quality.

The sound quality of the iPod is not great, and it's made even worse by the lacklustre standard headphones they are shipped with.

The Creative Zen 2 or 4Gb is much cheaper (£60-80 compared to £120 for a 4Gb nano), has much superior sound quality, better stock headphones, and doesn't REQUIRE it's own propriety software to work.

If it wasn't for the ludicrous amount of advertising Apple does (which it can afford because of the stonking huge margins on each iPod) the iPod would be an unknown.

I agree, my girlfriend has a 4gb Zen, and it beats the pants off my other friend's iPod Nano in sound quality. Also it was $50 less at the time of purchase.

The Zune seems kind of cool. Especially since MS has all the software you need to write your own games for it, for free.

Indeed they were. I was sad to say goodbye to my H140, my H340 is now permanantly connected in my car because the battery life just isn't there anymore and I can leave it plugged in charging all the time, so I use my Zune's the most.

Everybody hates on the pod. I have used a couple of different media players, and the ipod classic is by far the best one I have ever owned. I have not owned a zune, but given the information I know about it and what I've seen from others who have it (I've got a couple of friends who have owned one), I am quite sure I would like it far less that the pod. Ipod's only have somewhat worse sound than others b/c they do not support wma and other file types. Mac got their's popular first, and as far as I'm concerned they are still the best. There is a reason macs have become all the rage these days, and it is the ipod.

I like the Zunes way more then an Ipod/Iphone. I have an Iphone I like it and it does what it was made for but I still like the zune more. I wanted an pda/smart phone and music player so the iphone seemed like the best bet.
