Yes you "could" but it would be FAR FAR from worth it.

I'm sure you can buy a socket and other parts from foxconn and such. But its cheaper to buy a pre-built this time

you can get logic boards and programmable IC's and stuff as well as crystal displays resistors transsistors and capacitors at like radio shack i suppose depending on your programming skill it wouldnt be hard to make a "computer" but i think the best you could get away with is a calculator with the easily available commercial parts like you find at radio shack.

its not possible for anyone to do this in their home. Definitely not cost efficient either.
Look at your own motherboard and see the complexity. Unless you understand every little thing about it have the tools in your home its not possible.
Did you really consider on trying to make your own?
Also (with all due respect) if you really had to ask if you can build one then you definitely wont be able to.

Hmm I have almost all the tools that would be required to do such things, in my home...
It's very possible for someone to make a mainboard at home. Granted it would take a few $$ worth of tools and a programmer and I guess an electrical engineer to do it and make it really "work".

first you will need the blue prints, and I'm not sure you will ever get them.
just remember that mobos are made with 4 or 8 or maybe more layers :D

well the main problem i see the you wont be able to overcome is the "micro" soldering needed for the chips, even if you had a big enough magnafying glass you cant get a soldering tip that small to prevent solder blobs shorting accross things.

i would suggest you think smaller and build a power supply or maybe a plug in card

It is possible! Think about the ol' days, before apple was apple :D They hand builded motherboards! but it aint possible to built a modern one, without some million dollars equipment.

I rather doubt this. The complexity is just to great to be done at home alone. Remember that these modern boards are built by machines and many experienced workers. It's like you asking if you can build a V8 engine. It's possible but I think you never will.

you better go with Keakar suggestion and build something like a power suply.
it will be much easier to get all the required parts - transformer, resistors, diodes, transistors...

this is realy possible to build at home.
maybe you can even try to create the print board for it.

well you can build it, get a motherboard PCB made for you, there are compaines out there that do make premade stuff like this for specialized computers and what not.

Though for history might i suggest something simpler but sure to impress your teacher?

Build a radio, there not to hard to do, just have to special order some parts for it.

http://sci-toys.com/scitoys/scitoys/radio/radio.html

this guide can help there.

lol that is highly possible actully, it's just expensive, you need to buy a press, lathe, ect to do it, or draw up good blue prints and pay the local machine shop to make it.

Might I suggest you simply build a computer, making notes and taking pictures step by step. Most people (probably including your teacher) have no idea even where to start building a computer. You'll do fine, and if you get stuck we're here to help ya out! :toast:

That is a good project, fun too, and you can pick your parts... I'm highly considering building my own power supplies from now on, there is still a decent amount of money to be saved in doing that.

@ Braveheart- That's an excellent suggestion as well. Either way you go, it would be neat indeed to see pics and notes of the process!

possible but youd have to have a steady hand and be willing to pay more than a pre built. Plus youd have to have alot of time and patience.

Todays motherboards use a lot of surface mount technology and that is impossible to replicate without a smt machine.
