I hate to say it, but it's not worth putting money into the socket 939. I recently switched from my 939 system because I needed a better processor (was running a 3200+ (venice core, 2.0Ghz, 512kb L2 cache)). Finding a processor that's worth your money is nearly impossible. Also, if you want to upgrade your memory, you will get ripped off. DDR is much more expensive than DDR2 right now.
What's your budget?
Here's my recommendation:
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128327
Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103771
Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098
That'll give you a 2.8 GHz (2x1mb L2 Cache), 2GB RAM system that can eventually take the Phenoms (or any other AM2+ processor that comes out later).
Total price is about $230 before shipping.
What's your budget?
Oh, forgot to mention. I don't know if your GPU is separate now. If not, a 8600GT is about $90.
Ignore people who say you need to drop more than $100 on a video card. They think that game performance is THE benchmark by which you measure a computer.
Others (like me) seem to think that a computer is benchmarked by every day tasks and gains bonus points for game performance.
