I'm going to hold a contest, whoever comes up with the best rig under $700 to replace my old beast of a full ATX system will have it built after their design and named after them as I post the specs on here.

Parts I already have -
Dual layer Lightscribe burner by ASUS
650W Cooler Master eXtremepower Duo power supply.

I want included in the rig a good TV tuner with a remote, and the ability to run some semi-new games such as Oblivion, and newer less system heavy ones such as Spore (I hope it won't be too system heavy?)

I WON'T be overclocking, and don't want a big flashy case. I'd prefer it to hold the ATX power supply, but be relatively small as well.

Hmm, that's not a very good prize, but what the hey. Monitor as well? OS preference?

I plan to get a 22-24" widescreen, and I want to run both XP (TinyXP Rev09) and Vista 64 bit.

That's similar to the one I was working on, I didn't feel like linking. Move up to the 1800hvr b/c it costs the same amount almost. The e7200 is $70 cheaper than the e8400 and w/ some good oc is almost as good. 4gb for vista, I picked a-data ddr2-800. SE16 WD 640gb. $40 more and twice the space and more speed. All from newegg also (sorry to piggyback Katanai). :)

if he isn't going to overclock you should purchase a quad core. change NZXT case to Centurion 590.

Quad cores are too expensive for a $700 build, and are currently not used enough to make the price/performance worth it imo. Shadow that hdd is actually pretty slow (compared to the others) and if he's recording tv he should have at least a 500gb hdd.

$190 (INTEL61710) promotional code, he shouldn't purchase a wolfdale unless he's going to overclock. conroe is another option. and yes a SE16 or 7200.11 will be faster.

Yeah, I guess that a'int bad, and it would help w/ the encoding w/ the tv. Conroe is more expensive when comparing performance/price, they're pretty obsolete for new builds imo.

Well you ignored our suggestions all together, so I guess you win. Looks pretty good though, but intel would be faster for the same price. Definately change that hdd, get a Samsung F1 750gb, they can be had on the egg for the same price and are much faster than that one you have. Or you can drop $20 for the 640gb SE16, which is faster (but noticeable difference from the F1 wouldn't be much). 4gb of memory would help w/ vista and tv encoding. That proc is a little weak, but good power/performance ratio.

The E8400 + P43 will destroy the 4850e like a nuclear warhead on a little island.

Intel is just much faster clock for clock, and has far more overclocking headroom. Like the others said, the e8400 is around twice as fast as that, for twice the price though. But that's at stock. When oc is factored in there is no contest at any length of price/performance or anything. The e4850 is mostly good for a htpc build, as it has low power consumption and low heat output. For a computer regularly used, it's a little on the weak side.

Pos's build looks good, although again, the SE16 640gb is cheaper, faster, and has more space (why will nobody listen to this ). Also 4gb of slower memory would be more advantageous to the build than 2gb of faster memory.

Will the 6850 support 64 bit OSs?

If so I may just go for 8gb memory and make this computer as futureproof as possible.

Well. I like the 6850 a whole bunch.

Someone help me find a TV tuner I could rig up my RCA inputs from my Wii and my dish coaxial inputs to and record from, as well as hold good quality during live tv viewing?
