GeForce GTX 280+ to fight the 4870X2?

Recently we published an article stating the top 10 reasons to attend NVISION 2008. Well you can now add an 11th reason. *** has learned that NVIDIA will launch the 55nm successor to the GeForce GTX 280 at NVISION 08. We previously had our suspicions that the launch would be at NVISION. If you remember in the past NVIDIA has launched other GPUs at GeForce LAN, which is still a part of NVISION, although the scope of the event is much broader than just a large LAN party.

This visual computing mega-event will be held in San Jose, California from August 25th-27th. According to NVIDIA the host and main sponsor of the event: "NVISION will gather together top visual computing professionals, world-class gamers, innovative artists and designers, and cutting-edge researchers to share their ideas, experiences, and passions."

Apparently NVIDIA was simply giving 55nm a test run with the newly released GeForce 9800 GTX+. Now they will implement the shrinkage to their GeForce GTX 280 and 260 GPUs. Expect the clock, shader, and possibly memory speeds to increase. Although the name is still being finalized it is safe to assume it will carry something like the GeForce GTX 280+ moniker.

When ATI releases their Radeon 4870 X2 in mid August they will certainly have one hot product on their hands. Be rest assured however, that ATI will have very tough competition in the high end segment with the release NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280+ (if that is what it will be called). It has been important to NVIDIA to have a high end product released around the time schools start again. Expect the pricing war to be very fierce right from launch this time around.

Or the submit news button on the front page too! :D

Wolf, have you done that and recieved no credit? I've seen other users do what you're doing and there's been flame wars and bad situations because of it, I think you're a good member, but I just hope you're more in good spirit than rebelling against the cause.

Interesting info...but it's something I want to see results of after it's released, maybe I'll step-up to a GTX 260/280+ if it's worth it!

why are you post this every time he post a bit of news. There is simply nothing wrong with him posting this. This forum is here to discuss current events, nothing says a member cannot post a bit of information if he wishes. News is not limited to the staff only. Thx wolf for posting this information I was looking for the release date and couldn't find it.

thanks trt740 for appreciation. Thats exactly my motive. I want to bring interesting topics for everyone to discuss.

Also if someone criticizes me, I'm not going to respond because I dont want to start a flame war or hurt other person's feelings. TPU is a free forum and everyone is allowed to post their comments, positive and negative. And i value your opinion.

On-Topic : I dont think Nvidia's going to get a much better card on 55nm unless they have more shaders. ATM increase in clocks will not lead to significantly better performance . Spartan is going to be the king for this round.

How is the 9800GTX+ a flop? Its a good card just priced wrong imo. If they want it to sell it should be 150-180$.

judging from my 280 if they can get the card to 800 core shaders 1700 it will be close.

The GTX280 is already a beast of a card for the price it is right now. So I really don't care about the GTX280+ matching the 4870x2 or whatever. The GTX280 can actually reach insane speeds with extreme cooling, much higher than 900 or even 1000. Unfortunately, the 260 is nothing to write home about when compared to the 280, OC'd or not.

I'm not so sure the 260 when overclocked will surpass at 4870 and that nothing to sneeze at.

GTX280 for $375 is the card to get right now .

Thats just insane price/performance ratio . not even 4870 can beat that. At the same time we could see GTX260 drop down to $220 and nvidia could again be selling cards like hotcakes like the 8800GT generation . What a comeback that could be for nvidia, a hit after the same card flopped . And what a little profit nvidia will be making !

@ Kursah
-> I dont think you'll be able to sleep tonite , the wait for 260 must be killing you right now . I think everyone can feel your anxiety as we all have been there done that, and hopefully will do that more and more in future :D:D:D

As for me, i think I'll be staying with 7600gt this generation, became independent , moved to a new apartment and bought a new car (Mazda 3) and i dont know how i'm going to pay bills .

The 260 hasn't been coming down recently like the 280. A 280 can be had right now for under $400 while a 260 at about $300, both b4 rebates.
I'm not into OCing cards that can max games at stock. You're just straining the cards more & don't even use the increase power of the cards.
Unless you're playing junk like Crysis, then you can OC the cards all you want & Crysis will still eat them.
Sure an OC'd 260 can beat a OC'd 4870, but neither can touch a stock 280 on normal cooling. The 280+ shouldn't be all that better than the 280.
I can see 10-20%, but if that's the case then the 280 will be a much better value anyway. The 280+ will also just make the 280 even cheaper.

It that isn't win/win with the 280 then I don't know what is :toast:
