Need help with building computer

Guys, I need some help. Friend wants a PC cause he doesnt have one. I sold all my lower end computer parts so I cant help him out there.

I need a good system that can surf the internet, do word processing and shit like that and he really has no interest in playing games. Dont need a case either. So basically something light. Was thinking something on the intel side but AMD is fine too. He's not picky.

His budget is 700. If it can be lower that would be great. Need to factor in a monitor too. If we can find it locally we might just pick it up that way.

Seems an E4200 is the same price as an E7200. ($119)

He wants to use Vista.

Here's a little somethin

Add vista to that (out of stock atm) at $700. He could of course get a smaller screen, that's a pretty good deal though. If your not gonna oc for him a amd might be better, the hdd is big but very fast. Of course, if he would never use that he could go down to the 320gb which is just as fast. Could also spend the extra dough on a 8400 from going down on the hdd and monitor, as it is a decent amount faster at stock.

I was thinking a 320GB hdd from the WD side. I have had good luck with them.

I will OC it for him but probably not a whole lot. Like I said, he will mostly use it for music and maybe pics. Im open to either side of the playing field.

8800 gt are cheap and there is the 4850 that is cheap also you could get him, either that or go for an 9600gso

dont go for a 8600 tho, its worth spending the $80 -$100 or what ever it is for a second hand 8800gt

personally the 4850 is a better card by a little and it dosnt cost too much either

i think that you should get a graphics card tho as he will benefit from it

How so? He wont be gaming. The 8800GT and the 4850 would just be a waste.

okay get a cheap card then anything up to $50 i would say

the rest of the system is overkill anyway for what your friend will use it for

I don't know why you would go dedicated at all w/ this build. Integrated graphics would do the trick easily, one less you have to pay shipping on. A good hdd and proc are good for any build, and will keep things moving swiftly for years to come. 4gb is quite beneficial w/ vista.

I got thinking about this last nigh actually when I was falling asleep.

Just get onboard GFX, get 4GB ram for vista x64, a 320GB hdd from WD, and a motherboard that also has onboard sound.

Gonna hammer out the build now. Well revise it anyway. Will post my results.

How far do you think I can OC that on a cheap generic 450w Sunbeam PSU? Im thinking 3GHz would suffice, but Id like to go farther as not to waste that 7200.

Take that last screenshot in my last post, subtract the HSF, and add in Vista HP Sp1 OEM for 109 and the price is $633 before shipping.

Question. Since he wants Vista and Vista likes RAM and he's only using it for music and surfing the net, would it be wise to even go the x64 route? Should I just stick with x86 and 2GB ram for simplicity's sake?

CPU changed to an E2220 for 89.99. Ill just OC it the best I can.

Question still remains, 2GB or 4? This answer will tell me what version OS.

I would definitely go for the e7200 over the e2220. 2mb more cache, faster clock for clock, and should be able to go over 3ghz on stock volts easily. Much less power, heat, and such needed w/ the e7200, which you could probably run on the stock hs. Definitely worth $40 imo.

I would say x64 w/ 4gb. I know he isn't doing much, but he is doing some stuff that could require speed, and I'm assuming he's not going to be looking to upgrade anytime soon. Besides, you can get all this stuff within his budget, so why not? If he's looking to go lower, ask him how low and work w/ that, otherwise get the best you can for his budget. I still like my build above best, maybe subbing out the 640gb for a 320gb, and the trancend for the g.skill (although that won't make much difference really).

Even 3 or 4 years down the road? I mean, don't get me wrong, if your looking to cut some cost then sure I guess go down. But the processor is used in everything, no matter how simple, and the difference between these two will be noticeable in every day tasks. Even equally clocked, the e7200 machine will seem faster and more responsive, all while using less volts and producting less heat than the e2220. Doing things like ripping and encoding music, photos and movies, and that difference will start to be huge. Plus the e7200 can of course go higher comfertabely than the e2220. The extra $40 again, I think is worth it. I mean, you can get a basic machine w/ 4gb of ram, vista, 500gb hdd, and a e2xxx at bb or something for around $700, and it'll come w/ monitor and printer. Something like the e7200 and it's oc abilities w/ you give a self-build the upper hand.

im just saying if all he is going to be doing with it is just wordprocessing, internet, and maybe a few movies a 80 dollar CPU is more than enough, also how much do some of the C2 6k series CPUs cost nowadays.

Hell he could get away with the Machine i have, yet i game on mine, Combat Arms, Project Torque, COD4, etc.
