+1 on the gx2. at stock settings, it beats the 4870 and gtx260 and is just a hair behind the gtx280, all for under $300

since your motherboard supports crossfirex I would say get a 4870 or 4870X2

that way you can just add another card later

why are you guys recommending him a slower card that costs the same amount as the gx2? He'd have to spend more money on another ati 4xxx card to beat the gx2. Right now, the only single card solution that beats the gx2 is the gtx280, which is over $500. ATI has nothing that can touch the gx2 for the price.

Right now, the only card I would consider recommending over the gx2 would be a gtx260, and that is only if the OP plans to OC it to gtx280 speeds.

by OP do you mean me?

and your saying that the gtx 260 OCed to the 280 speeds would be faster than a GX2? I think the GX2 would be faster because its pretty much like having 2 9800GTX's am i right? and it also has 1gig of ram. Can I OC the 260 to the 280 speeds with the stock cooler?

EDIT: will my 700 watt psu be able to handle an OCed 9800X2, or an OCed 260? I see the minimum psu wattage for the 9800X2 is 600watts. I also have my CPU and ram OCed.

BTW, at stock settings for my system, I score just over 15k on 3dmark06. Considering you have faster RAM, you'll score alittle than I do

I'm running my GTX260 @ 684/1479/1107 (not sure what stock GTX280 speeds are)

Just dont forget the GTX280 has more shaders and mem, so the GTX260 has to clock faster than it to compare

I'm running my OC'd GTX260 on a 650W corsair. What is your ampage on 12v?

Yes I mean you when I say OP.

yes, a gtx260 OC'ed to gtx280 speeds will be faster than a stock gx2, but if you OC the gx2 like I do to mine, the gtx260 will be left behind.

700 watts is enough for the gx2, main thing you have to think about with the gx2 is that it requires a 8 pin and a 6 pin pci-e connector. I'm running a 750 watt PSU on my system(cooler master real power pro 750 watt)

9800 GX2 on load will draw 380 watts OC probably around 400-420

so look at your PSU and see what your + 12 volts are rated at.

lots of points/questions there....the GX2 is actually two 8800GTS 512MB I beleive? Yes you can overclock the 260 to speeds in excess of what you would overclock the 280 on stock cooling and a good overclock on the 260 (750-775mhz) would give you near stock 280 performance, of course the 280 has more SP's, ROP's and TMU's but the 200 odd extra mhz would more or less make up for that.

The GX2 is a great card but it is BIGGGGG and wont actually fit many cases, it consumes more power also. Your 700W should handle the GX2 but there wont be a lot of juice spare, it will handle of course the 4870 or 260 better.....my recommendation would be, get the GX2 if it fits, get either of the other two if it dont, whichever is cheaper.

I just looked on newegg, and I can't find a TT 700 watt psu with both a 6 pin and a 8 pin pci-e connectors. You would need a 6pin to 8 pin adaptor for a gx2 with your current psu.

2 months is a perfect amount of time to wait for the up-coming 4870X2. By then, the drivers would have matured.

If you could list the specification of your Dad's soon-to-be PC that's be awesome, I'd be able to get a better idea if the 4870X2 would be the right choice.

On topic, that 9800gx2 is fugly, and needs an awful lot of juice.I will stick to my recommend of 4870(x2(times 2)) and the 4870x2.

mine does have both it has an 8 pin connected onto the psu non modular, then it has a few 6 pin ones, and i think a 6-8 pin addapter too.
