Heat spreaders and thermal paste?

Do you use thermal paste with heat spreaders? Is there a specific kind of thermal paste for it?

End of summer I'm buying heat spreaders, e2180, a second gig of RAM, and thermal paste if needed. I wanted to OC my RAM and CPU a teeny bit.

Edit: I just noticed the heat spreaders come with tape. I have little experience using thermal tape. Does it work well?

You could use thermal adhesive pads, or something like MX-2 which is not conductive to electricity.

If you're not upto using thermal pads u can apply thermal paste (AS5, TX-2, OCZ Freeze), and then use some kind of clipping mechanism to keep the heatsinks in place.

I've come to a conclusio that once u apply the right amount of thermal paste the heatsink sticks to the area (CPU in my case) like it's glued on... although i wouldn't rely on it. Just get a simple clipping thingy to keep the heatsinks from falling off at high temps...

UPDATE: Also avoid ceramic (ceramique) compounds,as they tend to stiffen over time and lose some of its heat conductivity...

Don't get heatspreaders, those type of heatspreaders do more to hold the heat in than get rid of it. Grab a fan module, or ghetto-rig a fan over them.

since I type slow, I agreed with Dark. I say forget the aftermarket spreaders and invest in a ram cooler instead!

Hehe, if you look at it that way, first invest in a new PC, then buy ram heatsinks or a ram cooler

I gave my brother 70 dollars to stick in the bank so I could order a mobo. The CF mobo was out of stock for a long time, so I chose another and got 3 80mm fans to get the most out of the 70. ...After shipping and taxes it came out to $70.00 LOL. I didn't even think if I needed the fans. :|

Nah, just don't get heatspreaders lol. A fan will do so much more for cooling than those type of heatspreaders ever will.

Aye i agree... just stick a 120mm 2000rpm fan on top of the ram and there you go, freezeing cold RAM :toast:

Thermal tape isnt bad and generally easier when sticking things like spreaders to memory ICs. You could use a thermal epoxy as well, but once on, kiss them goodbye for being able to remove them.

This OCZ RAM cooler does such a brilliant job. Keeps my RAM cool to the touch even at 1200Mhz and 2.3v

Yep, i could just use an OCZ XTC Ram cooler for my OCZ XTC Ram

I have used a few ram coolers and decided on this for total CFM and the quiet operation.
Plus it looks kinda cool with the my 4 tracers behind the fans flashing. :cool:

I believe the heatpipe and of course, the water cooled ones are the real deal, but expensive.
The cheap ones just trap more than dissipate.
Yes they can improve life of overvolted ram.

Sure, in a bad thermal situation and with good ram, they can help out to a great degree,...just like a good CPU cooler will.

If you're OC'ing your memory a "teeny" bit, then aftermarket heatspreaders and/or actively cooling the memory is just overkill.

Just buy some decent branded (Corsair, OCZ, Patriot...) memory with stock heatspreaders and OC away.

If you're going the active cooling route, a ghetto modded 120mm fan over the memory works wonders, and should be very quiet and effective.

You will only see the benefits of active cooing when really stretching performance memory to it's limits with high speeds and/or tight timings. For the casual overclocker, it's more for peace of mind and possible increased stability in a poorly ventilated case...

Ahh, I see. I am going to buy the OCZ cooler for my next build. I really like the looks of it.
Active cooling is the way to go for OCing ram.
