Updated Listings! Im surprised that there are so many replies to this thread, i though that the 8800 series cards were dieing off, but i guess they still are running.

Replies
pagalms: thanks
Tatty_One: is that another card, whats the vendor, or is that onealread on the list?
kyle2020: The Akasa Vortexx NEO is cooling right? What did you use for tim if that is the case.
nINJAkEIL: added your evga card to the list.

yep, the vortexx is the cooler - i sued the stuff that came with it, nothing fancy.

i can't get my evga 8800gs to 700 core. anyone else find this? it crashes the driver and artifacts without overheating. the review on here said it had some sort of limiter set by evga. they settled on 690

yet i've read some reviews on newegg where they say they have it well above 700. without changing the bios and stuff. just software / rivatuner. so idk

did you try upping the core, and dropping down your memeory and shader speeds? try finding your max core? And make sure you raise the fan speed up to 100%, thats what i do, i never let my card go above 65c and if it does, i'll drop the speed on the card first.

The bios mod let me go 20mhz more on the core! Temps are the same too.

hey guys how the heck do you get such HUGE clocks on the core of your 8800GT's?

i am getting this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133232

in a couple days and want to overclock it. unfortunately unlike my evga 8800GS it has no overclocked / superclocked version to compare it to. so idk where to set the clock. and i hate tinkering

for my GS i just clocked it to the level of the evga "Superclocked" version right out of the box. worked like a charm, then i took it a little further. for the PNY GT that is coming idk where to start :(

a newegg reviewer said he got it to 650 core, 1627 shader, 1910 memory clock. he also says thats the level of the "Superclocked" version but i can't find evidence their is such a PNY version on the entire internet.

does that sound like a good overclock to you? it seems sort of low. look in my specs and you can see where i have my evga 8800GS. so i was just wondering how the heck you guys get yours so high without mods?

but most of all do you think the overclock stats i posted from the newegg reviewer are good ones? think i could do that right out of the box? well...i may "burn" the card in first. but after that i'd like to kick it up a notch or two

thanks :)

My eVGA 8800GT KO managed great clocks, but i believe the reason my card could overlcock so well is because it was already able to clock up, from what i believe( I may be wrong) that card companies clock their better performing cards faster and then sell them as KO, SSC, etic. My friends eVGA 8800 GT AKIMBO series could hit almost to 800 on the core while everything else was linked, memory was i believe 1050. To go from 720 to almost 800 (790 i think) isn't that fast, but considered to what 8800 GT cards run that fast.

To All, will update list tomorrow, sry about that ive been lazy lately,

A very simple BIOS mod and flash gives more headroom, if you dont know it I could help, to put it simply, the BIOS limits the card to 1.1V on the GPU, the max harware voltage level is actually 1.15V so you can mod your BIOS to give 1.15V and that should enable ANY 8800GT to hit at the very least 730mhz core.

thanks a lot. i'll look into that.

you are welcome to post w/e you know about it, however. or link something. if its safe, i will do it. or attempt to. when i'm ready. i haven't messed around in BIOS a lot, but i'm comfortable trying stuff

as of right now i am happy with its performance with my modest overclock. its quite the impressive card, my new 8800GT. makes a considerable difference over the 8800GS at 1680X1050 in GRID (unplayable at max settings at my native res with the GS for the stuttering / jitters) and Call Of Juarez. which was unacceptable at 1680X1050, DX10. now its "like butter" as they say :)

oh, so my new card with my "for now" overclock:

PNY 8800GT 512MB 650/1640/950

you should be able to get some more out of your memory speed, also i have found out with my eVGA card that memory speed and core/shader speeds are opposite. Lowering memory speed will allow you to go higher on core/shader speed without artifice, i maybe be wrong but thats how my card acts.

Below is 100% stable everyday gaming clocks. I can go a smidgen higher for benching, but for a few mhz it's not worth it.

Just drop me a PM when you want to give it a try, I'll just tell you what software to download and write a simple little instruction for you, it's pretty easy.
i'll be taking you up on that offer for sure....
you should be able to get some more out of your memory speed, also i have found out with my eVGA card that memory speed and core/shader speeds are opposite. Lowering memory speed will allow you to go higher on core/shader speed without artifice, i maybe be wrong but thats how my card acts.
thanks for the input. i took your word for it and clocked it higher. ran a couple of stability tests, played a couple games for around 90mins. all is well

thanks dude

its early / late and i just got in and can't sleep. so i'm messing around with it

i went to 740/1860 (linked)/950 and got artifacts while playing Crysis. soon to be followed by the driver crashing. so i've dialed it back down to 700/1750/950. seems stable but i want a little more on the core. just because :)

question: i'm about to try 740 core again with a smaller shader overclock. however is it sort of pointless increasing the core and decreasing the shader clock? how are these things related, if at all? and how does each one affect performance? in gpu overclocking when all is said and done is "core King" so to speak? and so far as all the artifacting i got in Crysis most likely was that caused be the core clock, shader, or combo of both. i guess i might find out in a moment when i take the core back up to 740 but you never know with these things

also, i dialed back my memory overclock to 950 from 1000 as i saw some old forum posts in my research that said the 8800GT memory doesn't like overclocks of 1000 and more and can lead to premature card failure. i forget the reason and don't have the link. any truth to this? i do notice some in this thread have their GT's memory clocked above 1000. in some cases well above. yet others have it well below 1000. also, does overclocking the memory less (and shader) generally mean the core can go higher?

thanks

Try unlinked....740/1800 and see what that gives you and no, the core speed is more important and shows greater benefits than the shader speed....but within reason, if you have to drop shaders by 50mhz+ just to get 5mhz on the core, then no but tinkering is required :D

^hmm...thanks once again. and i've been tinkering and tinkering the last hour or so :)

so i went 740/1750 before i saw your above post. so that's close enough to what you suggested. no artifacts (so i figured that was a shader issue if not a combination of things) but the game (Crysis) got jerky sometimes, froze for a split second a few times, and was giving me mediocre performance in general compared to before when i had a stable overclock. then the driver would crash :/

so i did a little googling and settled on 720/1660 and gave it another go. and everything is great :)

now before i go i just wanna talk about this card a little. if this isn't the best $110 i've ever spent on a computer part idk what is. i come from an FX5200/6600GT/8600GT/8800GS. yeah, the 7 series and first wave of PCI-E passed me by. but anyway, when I got my 8800GS it was quite a leap in quality and performance over anything i had before. i read how its 75% of an 8800GT, with an overclock and below 1680X1050 it could come close to a stock GT, and on and on

ok, so its a good card. it overclocked nice and all that. but for those who said it couldn't match an 8800GT, now i finally understand. I guess it comes down to those stream processors, ROP's, memory bandwidth, and w/e else

because all i can say is WOW after living with this card a few days. i read a post once where a guy said it has more "horsepower" then the 8800GS or 9600GT. at the time i thought 'wtf is he talking about?' because it sounded so vague and somewhat silly. but now it makes perfect sense

the card does have more "horsepower." or at least more torque. if it were a car. its hard to describe, but games play smoother even if running at the same frame rate. frame rates are more consistent and when they drop its not as noticeable. Crysis, COD4, and Call Of Juarez have benefited in particular as they run fairly seamlessly. GRID seems supercharged as well. and its always a nice surprise when i hit a part of Crysis that i expect to slow down or lag from past experience, and it just doesn't. the card just powers through

now, is that to say the 8800GS or 9600GT don't do the job? of course not. they do it great. but not as consistently well or as smoothly

case in point is Call Of Juarez. in DX10 i could go with the 8800GS and get 45 FPS+, give or take. at 1440X900. but the game played sort of plodding. best way i can put it. COD4 sometimes, too. or i'd get a bit of slowdown

but with the 8800GT everything is just smooth, no slowdown, and if it does it remains smooth to the eye. almost as if you have two cars lined up to race. while the 8800GS screams off the line with a fuss and some skidding and jitters, the 8800GT just pulls away smoothly and strongly and stays that way. it is a GREAT gaming experience to play with this card

so NOW i understand the difference for myself. this card may not be the "fastest" around today, but it feels substantial nonetheless. unbelievable for what i paid. i'm gonna have this card until who knows when? i run into a game I can't play with it. and i'm willing to go 1440X900 'cause my monitor scales well. so it'll be awhile

anyway i've ranted enough. i'm just so happy and impressed with my new 8800GT :D

here are my FINAL overclock numbers. definitely gonna stick with this:

720/1660/950 :rockout:
