Hi everyone,

I've got the following in my rig

Intel P4 3.4GHz (aircooled at 3.9GHz)
Abit IC7-G
2x1 Gb PC4200 DDR1 Geil sticks
Radeon X1950 AGP (512 vram)

I am mostly using it for gaming; it's an almost capable machine, since I don't go more than 1280x1024 (19' LCD limitation). I'm getting 4000 points at 3dmark06, it can also do Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 smoothly.

So I was thinking of a light updrade, probably under 300 euros...

Intel Dual Core 2180 (great OC potential)
MSI P35 Neo2-FR 86
2x1Gb 800MHz DDR2 4-4-4-12 sticks
Club3D 8800GT 512MB

I can get those for 290 euros. Am I thinking wrong here?
Is there a component that can be swapped for something better?
Any other ideas for better specs?

Thank you in advance!

If you want a cheap upgrade, get an ASUS 775i65G off ebay (EUR 20), and a Q6600 pr Q6700 off ebay (EUR 80-100), and sell your P4 on ebay for EUR 25. Net cost EUR 75.

Then you will have:

Q6600 with 2GB DDR1 and X1950 AGP.

And no need to reinstall Windows. Just do a sysprep, switch off, and swap everything over.

If you want an even faster machine for gaming, get a HD3850 AGP for EUR 85 new. Sell your X1950 for EUR 40. Net EUR 45. Total spend EUR 120.

That's what I've got.

Sure I've thought of getting that. But I want to get off the AGP train and take the PCI-Express one.

For gaming he would be better off with a core2duo

Seems a bit silly to me to spend EUR 300 and end up with just a E2180 system. With the EUR 200 saved, he could buy a lot of games.

The Q6600 will outperform the E2180 in every way.

For 1280x1024 the 3850 AGP (which OCs to 3870 speeds, see my benchmarks else where on TPU) is more than enough.

There're two ways to go:

1./ Clever budget combination, fit for purpose, or
2./ Monster machine that's future proofed for completely different purpose.

There is no middle ground. That's only starting a life wedded to compromises.

There are more cpu's then only the Q6600 and the E2180, but he mentioned he uses it mainly for gaming and a good core2duo will just work fine for that.

What about a new
Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache

The E2180 with an 8800 will outperform the Q6600 with a 3850agp in games, hands down.

The video card is the single most important factor in gaming, the cpu is secondary.

Plus, he said he plans to OC the 2180. Ocing it will eliminate any bottlenecks the cpu might have caused in the first place.

His first choice is the right choice. He can pick up a better cpu later.

Yes, I am after futureproofing... The next step would be getting a better CPU and a better graphics card (without changing mobo). Thats a priority...

Wile E. You missed some important facts:

Return on investment for 1280x1024.

Both choices are valid. One offers better performance per $ spent. Significantly. And does not require reinstalling OS, apps and games.

Stick with your original plan, but see if you might be able to grab a slightly better cpu (E5xxx). If not, the 2180 will do fine.

I am with the program. This is tested by me on my own rigs. Even at 1280x1024, the 8800GT significantly outperforms my 2900XT. Even when my 2900XT is on this quad core rig, and the 8800GT is on my X2 6400+ ;)

EDIT: When you turn on AA, the performance gap gets even bigger. Not to mention titles like Crysis and Clear Sky that are pure hardware punishers. The 8800GT walks away from 2900 without even trying.
EDIT2: It should be noted that the Quad was at stock speeds (3GHz).

soterman,

take a look at http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=742045&postcount=1

I dont disagree with Wile E that the 8800GT is faster, but $ for $, the Q6600/3850 gives you the best upgrade and will get you 3Dmark06 > 11,600 on the cheap. The EUR 200 you save can be put aside for a full platform upgrade at Xmas.

If you want to "upgrade again" soon, then perhaps consider spending a little more and getting the better machine now, rather than upgrading CPUs and GPUs every 6 months. Thats an expensive habit.

Yeah, but 3DMark is not games. That chart you gave says nothing about gaming performance at all, especially if you turn on AA.

For gaming, which is what he stated his purpose is, the E2180/8800GT give him the best upgrade and gaming experience. There's no question about it at all.

FFS you keep telling him to spend 3x as much. Of course its better. But its 3x as expensive, and that is NOT a budget upgrade.

Like I said earlier in this thread, you choose:

1./ Cheap upgrade, or
2./ Expensive new platform

But a budget new platform isnt going to be cost effective.

WTF does that matter? He stated he was willing to spend 300. The E2180 and 8800 upgrade falls within his stated budget and provides the better gaming experience. I haven't deviated from what he has said at all.

Not only that, he explicitly stated he wants to move away from AGP to PCIe. That way he can at least take the video card with him in the future if he upgrades again.

I'm sorry, but I don't think your idea is a good one.

^I think you have a pretty good set of hardware there for the 300 Euros.

Which other videocards can you get for the price of a Club3D 8800GT 512MB?

Btw 1280x1024 would be a 17inch lcd.

It's an LG 1915S monitor. Bought it in the late 2004s. It can only do 1280x1024.

The Club3D 8800GT 512MB I can get for 108 euros, shipped.

Other graphics cards around that price are:

Point of View 9600 GT 512MB
Manli 9800 GT 512MB
Asus Radeon HD 3870 512MB
Foxconn 8600GTS 256MB

It's an LG 1915S monitor. Bought it in the late 2004s. It can only do 1280x1024.

The Club3D 8800GT 512MB I can get for 108 euros, shipped.

Other graphics cards around that price are:

Point of View 9600 GT 512MB
Manli 9800 GT 512MB
Asus Radeon HD 3870 512MB
Foxconn 8600GTS 256MB
MSI 8800 GTS 320MB

What do you think?

I would probably go for an HD3870 but if Nvidia is your brand the Club3D 8800GT 512MB seems a good choice, if not the best card price/performance wise.
