At the moment, I have 1024 megabytes of ram(2x 512). I went to crucial.com and found that i needed a type of ram called DIMM but it also said DDR. I was wondering if they are the samething or two totally different types of ram.

I ask because i called Best Buy and they said that they didn't carry DIMM anymore and i would have to buy it off the website.

Thanks.

I wouldn't trust any one who answers the phone at Best Buy. DIMM is some acronym used with memory, I am not sure what it means, but there is also SODIMM which is used in notebooks, so DIMM is what you want. DDR stands for Double Data Rate which refers to how the ram works (doubles the data rate, so DDR400, the data rate is 200mhz but doubled thus 400mhz gets you DDR). If you give us some more information on your system, we may be able to suggest some better ram at probably a much better price than you could ever find at Best Buy

P.S. Everything I explained above is how I understand it and may have technical errors.

Dual In-Line Memory Module.

There are 2 common types of DIMMS. 168 Pin SDRAM and 184pin DDR SDRAM. Both are very different and each has a different socket type on the motherboard.

You need to figure out if you have 168 or 184pin.

The easiest way to tell is pull one stick. IF the pins are broken into 3 groups (2 notches) then its old school 168pin sdram. If its broken into 2 groups (one notch in the middle) then its 184pin ddr.

It's the 184 pin DIMM, and what kind of information did you want on my system?

The stuff from the dxdiag note and is all DIMM out of date?

Do not post the dxdiag stuff. Go to your User CP on this forum and enter your system specifications.

It is covered in a blue metal covering, the name on the outside says Patriot(I think).

I also update the system specs.

Because it's a retail store....Real stores are almost always more expensive...not to mention you pay sales tax.

Order from newegg, tigerdirect, or some other reputable e-store.
