Sony Compact Flash Card 133x low speed issue

I just bought a Sony Compact Flash Card 133x High Speed 20MB/s (Read/Write)

I just tested it with hd tune and the transfer rate is only 5.8MB/s which would be a 38.6x speed :wtf:

Is my cardreader not USB 2.0?

I can use it with readyboost but the read/write spead should be 20MB/sec instead of 5.8MB/sec!

USB1.1 has max throughput of 1.5MB/s so that can't be the issue.
Card reader drivers?

I did a right click on the device in the device manager and let windows search for a new driver online but it said it's up to date...

However the driver date is 6/21/2006..

I'm gonna check on the sony website, maybe they have a driver for it?

Try turning off Readyboost. The system might be trying to cache files while the bench is running.

I turned off readyboost but the transfer speed stays at 5.8MB/s :wtf:

BTW I have formatted the CF card to NTFS

Format options for this CF card are:

NTFS
FAT
FAT32
exFAT (?)

Did you try FAT32? There's no benefit to using NTFS on a 2GB drive. NTFS is only useful if you plan to work with files over 4GB.

I bought this cf card for vista readyboost since it should have a 20MB read/write per second transfer rate

Random Access is more important than transfer speeds for readyboost. But anyway, it's probably best to format it FAT32. NTFS is a slower file system.

Well, if you are only using it for readyboost, it doesn't matter. It only needs fast access time. 1ms is plenty fast enough for that task.

It could also be that your card reader doesn't support the proper mode to achieve the high speeds with a CF card. They can run as an ATA device.

Yes my card reader is probably the problem, but it is internal connected to USB2.0.

Would you know which card readers support the proper mode to get the full 20MB/sec read/write speed?

I just have a generic external one. I get full read speeds off of my CF cards with it. Sorry, but I can't really help you there. I never had to do any searching for a supported one cause mine just always worked. Sorry again.

USB 2.0 card readers can be very slow. i have a 27 in 1 reader that gets less than half the transfer rate of reading the card via my camera over USB.

could be due to the fact that the bandwith is divided between the 27 different cards eventhough all are not in use.

its not impossible. its one of those ones that has 'ghost' drives show up when its plugged in, even if no media is in those slots.

Does the same happen in linux?(I've never had to use cards for data storage other than my mp4 which connects directly)

Bought it at a local sony store for $32.

I copied a 600mb installer with Tera Copy and the speed is 5.3MB/s.

On the tab policies from the Generic 2.0 Reader-CF USB Device proporties I use
"optimize for quick removal"

and not "optimize for performance" since I ONLY use it for readyboost.

You can just try buying a good quality card reader but before you do that just use ready boost feature to see if your happy with the performance of the system.

Found a card reader that would possibly support the full 133x speed.
It does not say that it supports UDMA mode but I assume "CF Extreme" is the same as UDMA 4 / 5 modes?
