Is my PSU up to Xfire a 4850 and a 4870?

I have the TT Toughpower 700watt modular psu. it has 2x 6 pin PCIE adapters. the 4850 already takes up one so if i now get a 4870 to pair it in CF ill need to more 6pin for that. Can i use a 4 pin to 6 pin adapter or somthing? Do i need a different PSU? or should i just get another 4850? also will two 4850s out perform a single 4870?

Just get another 4850. Less trouble, and you can keep your current supply.

but wouldnt a 4870 with the 4850 give me more of a performance gain? I may easily be able to get another PSU. It would just have to be under about $150 or so. Do adapters work well?

It would be a little but its way cheaper just getting another 4850.

I doubt it's anything different than 4850 crossfire. You probably just waste more electricity.

Edit: Electricity thing makes no sense, but you're still wasting cash. lol

Sorry, again. Unless both cards are 1gb, you won't see any improvement over having a second 512mb card. I'd get the 1gb only if you plan on replacing the 512 later on. Brand doesn't matter.

I also looked up some benchies the other day and the 1gb doesn't show the difference over 512mb that the 4870 does. I'll have to find them again.

I would just get the same card that you have before, if not only a 512mb one. The 1gb will be a waste because the card will only be able to use 512mb of the ram so it can match your other 4850.

I'd say anywhere between 0% and up to 0%. I'd look up some reviews. (Trying to right now, lol)

The HD 4870 would provide performance of HD4850 in CF. I have done that.

And the PSU is absolutly fine. I can run HD 4850 and HD4870 with a Ultra 600W Pro PSU .
The peak wattage shown on my Kill-a-Watt meter is around 380W . Rest of the system specs in profile .

I'm selling the HD4870 and HD4850 , both are new. Hit me up if you want them
.

well my problem is not wattage but the fact that i only have 2x 6 pin pcie connectors from the PSU

I have two 6 pin connectors that i can plug in modualrly, and then there is one 8 pin that is connected right to the PSU, then there is a seperate modular 8 pin connector that would take the place of one of the 6 pin modular ones. I currently am using one 6 pin so only have room for one more. could i get an adapter that makes an 8 pin to a 6 pin?

Hey wait no NVM!!! I can make the 8 pin one into a 6 pin pcie connector so i now have enough power cables for a 4850 and a 4870. now the question is that is it worth $100 of my dads money to get the 4870 over the 4850 for the added performance gain.

To say the least no... the 4850 and 4870 use the same gpus and the problem with crossfire and the 4xxx series is that you'll only get the performance of 2x 4850 with a 4870 and a 4850. The main board must meet the same clocks on gpu and memory as the 2nd board and vice versa. If you have a high def display I wouldn't hesitate to get 2x 1gb 4850.

so a 4870 would give me no advantage over a 4850? well what if i got the 4870 then later upgraded and got another 4870? would a single 4870 out perform a CF 4850s?

Ummm... Yes. Don't quote me. I'm not entirely sure...

Second question = no.

No. At higher clocks the 4850s in CF will spank the crap out of stock CF 4870, but the 4870 can OC more because of the higher memory clocks. Trust me I have CF 4870 and there is not much more performance in games, but in everything else it is really nice. It was really nice before when I only had one xD.

My point is that if you're looking out for that next big game 2x4850 will do more than enough. 2x4850 beats a GTX280; my single 4870 maxed out all my games save Crysis which I don't really play. Newer games from trusted developers, e.g. Starcraft 2, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2 and expansions to MMOs like Lich King aren't going to get close to pissing on a 4870. Bang for the buck 2x4850 are amazing and in practice they are amazing. Remember they have the SAME gpu as the 4870.

Also, two 4850s in crossfire can be overclocked to be somewhat close to crossfire 4870 speeds. :D

It'd be a challenge and I wouldn't recommend stock cooling!

Heh, a few of the new 4850s have sweet coolers on them. Dual slot for external system exhaust would be nominal, but don't kid yourself... the 4870s get much more hot because of that DDR5
