Because Khronos is taking over Mantle for Vulkan (successor to OpenGL) development. Both APIs (DirectX and Vulkan) now have the technology so as a separate project for AMD, it is no longer important. AMD's part is done.

Yep, I think all PC gamers should praise AMD for mantle as it seems to have given MS the kick up the backside it needed with DX.

This is old news mate, AMD stated months ago they were working on DX12 with MS. DX12 is basically derived from Mantle.

Some of the DX12 .dll version numbers were the same as mantle .dll's. l

Btw DX12 beats Mantle in 3DMark API test with AMD WHQL drivers.

Mantle is closer to the metal than Direct3D 12 so it is faster but at the cost of being more complicated to code. Direct3D has always tried to strike a balance between directly coding for the GPU and being simple for programmers to use.

DX12 is developed from Mantle. In the API bench DX12 draw calls are only about 10% more than Mantle. I tested it yesterday.

DX12 isn't really a huge leap over DX11 anyway, it's basically a feature level of DX11...

Also fwiw 3D Mark doesn't support DX12, it only runs in DX11.1 What the API results really show is WDDM 2.0.

If I get some time I'll bench a few games and see how WDDM stacks up in real world results. I can say GTA V runs better though, maybe by 10-20fps? I haven't spent enough time on it yet....

Yeah I've heard it on the WAN show today.
TBH DX12 will bring pretty close performance to mantel's so I guess they shifted their focus else ware (Hopefully to try and make a new high end cpu - "A man can dream, cant he").

Thanks to Mantle, I was able to play Battlefield 4 maxed out on HD7950 at 1080p. I'll have it in good memory just like S3 Metal on S3 Savage cards from 15 years ago...

Yeah hats off to AMD for Mantle, it's really great to see them force Microsoft to fix the underlying issues with DirectX. :toast:

Mantle is the basis of OpenGL Successor Vulkan. Mantle didn't go anywhere its just being worked on by someone else. As a proper DX alternative.

Vulkan drops the misc bullshit that made OpenGL a pain in the ass.
