I'd honestly look towards a 2011 system. Something like http://www.ebay.com/itm/Xeon-E5-1650-CPU-EVGA-X79-SLI-Motherboard-/132189512619 would be a good start. E5-1650's a 3.2 GHz hex with an unlocked multiplier, essentially the same chip as a 3930K with ECC support. Motherboard side of things...
Here's something a little different: Xeon E5-1650. Basically an i7 3930K with ECC support.
It actually holds up really well for its age. Modern CPUs are a bit faster single core but multi core it seems to hold up fine with mid range chips.
Decided to play with the PS/2 P70 today, actually put the ram expansion back in and throw the modem back in for some testing stuff.
Specs:
20 MHz Intel 386DX
12 MB RAM
120 MB HDD
VGA Graphics on an orangegas plasma screen
2400 baud modem
Not that old by my standards but still one of the oddities. GeForce 2 Ultra, back in the days where you had the GTS then you had this, and you should've just bought the GTS.
Picked up a W3520 from a guy for $5 shipped. It'll go into my 2nd T3500 whenever I get around to building that up to sell (aka actually put ram and an HDD in it).
Been cleaning up the house and finding some odds and ends. Nothing is really new but if you need a budget system for a kid or something, here's a chance for some cheap parts.
A8M2N-LA - $15. Socket AM2 board from some HP, not sure which. Board works fine without issues, has a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon...
I'll admit a lot of my hardware is actually scrap\dumpster found stuff. Never worried about dirt, I know enough common sense to use gloves when dealing with laptop cleaning and simple green does a great job on most anything. Unfortunately it's been almost a year since I've actually been able to...
My desktop, a Precision T3500 with Xeon X5560, 12 gigs ram, R7-240 and 2x 500 GB HDDs on a PERC 6/i. In the future I'll probably throw a 6-core in but haven't had the money.
Dell used that to provide additional SATA power plugs. There's a breakout cable that plugs onto there, not entirely sure why you'd need it in something that already has 6 SATA + 2 Molex though. iirc that connector originated in the Optiplex GX270 and lived on until the first or second revision...
I needed my XPS L502x back from my mom so I decided to throw together something using space parts. All she does is secretary-type work and facebook games so this is good enough.
Dell XPS 720 with:
Core 2 Quad Q6600
5 GB Mix-N-Match ram (since this system's the worst I've ever seen for being...
That's actually a server fan connector of some sort afaik.
If you have a soldering iron you can snip the server connector off and run molex to the power lines (red and black) and run the remaining (blue and yellow) to a PWM fan connector and have some speed control rather than trying to find a...
