Which Ubuntu with Compiz + windows 8 build

Concur with the Nvidia card -- their proprietary Linux driver is consistently better and more reliable than AMD drivers. If you really want to play with the UI configuration and fancy desktop effects, you might want to give Kubuntu a spin. KDE is considerably more re-configurable than...

The Official Linux/Unix Desktop Screenshots Megathread

If you install and configure samba on the Linux host, then the Windows VM can see the host as a server, and can copy and save files from the Linux system. This way, if you have special Windows proprietary software, or a printer that is not supported in Linux, you just jump over to Windows and...

Which manufacturers drives have failed on you?

Funny, I hear that said, but all my evidence (OK not THAT huge a list) goes the other way. The other day I pulled an old WD-153BA out of the drawer and installed Bodhi Linux on it, just because I needed an IDE drive to experiment on. I also have a pair of WD-740s that ran Win XP daily as a...

The Official Linux/Unix Desktop Screenshots Megathread

I think this shows Windows in its proper context (it makes a GREAT printer driver, FYI).

How to update GRUB from a live CD?

Here's everything you'll ever to know about Grub-pc (aka Grub 2): http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3106368.0 I'd go to Section 4 and, with a Live CD to boot, just reinstall grub-pc and let update-grub build a new boot menu.

How do I remove the Linux Boot Loader?

You can zero out the Master Boot Record (MBR) with the "dd" command. Study up on it and be careful -- back up any data on the drive before you use it, and don't make a mistake on the drive ID.

Anyone get Adobe Flash player to install on 9.04?

Follow this guide for your version and architecture: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683 and you should have no problems with flash, java, codecs, etc.

are the latest linux nvidia drivers broken?

The 185-19 Beta driver is working fine on mine, Kubuntu 9.04 and sidux 2009-1 (both use Xorg 1.6 and KDE 4). I think there were other folks having issues with the 180 series. You might want to try the Beta, or else go back to 173 series.

need help installing nvidia drivers in ubuntu

Here's a little "how-to" written for Kubuntu -- it is the same for Ubuntu: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3100807.0 Don't worry that it was written for an earlier version of the driver. The procedure is still the same.

I'm in need of some coaxing into really learning linux..

If you're satisfied with Windows-world, why put yourself through a big learning experience just to run Linux? In other words, if the reason to use Linux isn't obvious, then don't inconvenience yourself -- just keep on paying for your software! :)

Ubuntu + MX 420 = 640x480 res (with the restricted drivers enabled!)

Cool. It's using the "nv" driver, which is fine for that card. Just don't waste your time trying to run 3D stuff like Compiz, and it will do just fine. :)

    the wonderful world of fedora

I tried Fedoracore 7, or maybe it was 8 -- whatever was current 2 years ago. But I was already hooked on Debian and KDE -- started with Kubuntu 6.06 and I still like Kubuntu. Fedoracore didn't feel as fast on my rig -- Compiz was definitely slower, and the package installation process seemed...

Ubuntu + MX 420 = 640x480 res (with the restricted drivers enabled!)

No guarantees for that old card, but I would get out of X (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a tty console and log in there), shut down the X server with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop and then use the Nvidia X configuration utility to write a new xorg.conf file sudo nvidia-xconfig Then try a startx and see what...
