    First New Startup Since 2003

Latest Poop on the BIOS Issue: Ok, what follows is about the ASUS P5E64 WS Evolution mobo which is what I'm using. Whether it applies to any other boards is unknown: My board is Revision 2.00 G. According to a couple of folks who have posted in the ASUSTeK forums, this revision comes...

    First New Startup Since 2003

Oh that! :o Good catch! Yeah, they're fast, but bug-suckers are loud and they smell bad. :D Pete (who likes fabric-covered planes with radial engines)

    First New Startup Since 2003

I'm not sure whether this helps me or not, but the as-built BIOS on the mobo does support the Q9550 SLAWQ (C1). The Q9550 SLB8V (E0) I have is just the latest version of the same chip. Pete

    First New Startup Since 2003

Well Friday (Oct 31) will be the big day ... I'll be cleaning out my P180 case and installing the pile of new components sitting on the workbench (listed in my System Specs) and I should be ready for startup by noon. What follows is what I think is the most logical way to proceed, provided I...

    Video Card Installation Question:

I want the 8.10 'cause it apparently makes it easy to optimize the fan speed. At the risk of you guys never answering another question for me, I'm not a gamer so the FarCry hotfix doesn't sound like something I'll need. Pete

    Video Card Installation Question:

Yeah, I just linked to the MSI page on the card in my original post. I like the fact that it runs pretty cool but I really like the fact that it's quiet. Pete

    Video Card Installation Question:

I'll finally be building my new system as soon as my RAM arrives from Newegg and I have a silly question about installing the video card. The system details are in my System Specs file but the short version is it will be a Vista x64 system with an Intel Q9550 and an MSI R4850 512M (MS-V803-252)...

Does my system still cut it?

That can be a double edged sword, though. Take my situation, for example: I'm finally replacing a single-core (Northwood 130nm P4) XP Pro system I built about 6 years ago with a Core 2 Quad (Q9550) system running Vista x64. I'm using top-shelf hardware and I expect this new system to last me for...

Does my system still cut it?

I finally realized that obsolescence occurs when something no longer does what I expect it to do, not whether it's the newest or best. I can't even begin to calculate how much money that revelation has saved me. And old can be cool! Take my 1970 Chevelle SS 454, for example. ;) I will say...

How do I go about cleaning this...

I've seen much worse! I used to maintain the computers for a couple of CNC routers in a sign shop and they'd get worse than that in a couple of months. I'd just pop the covers off and hose them out real good with compressed air and all was good again. That can kill optical (CD, DVD) drives...

Older Monitor on Vista x64 ??

That's what I wanted to read. Looks like I'm back on the x64 fast track, but I'm hedging my bets by buying the retail version of Ultimate which comes with both x86 and x64 disks. Pete

Older Monitor on Vista x64 ??

Well, despite everything I've posted so far, I'm still trying to find practical work-arounds for all the incompatibilities between an x64 system and all my x86-only hardware so I can justify running the x64 version of Vista Ultimate on the new system I'm building. For what it's worth, the only...

    outlook opens word?

If you use a version of Outlook prior to v. 2007, there's a checkbox in one of the preferences tabs which controls this. You can choose Word or Outlook Editor. V. 2007 no longer includes Outlook Editor, though. It has it's own 'light' verson of Word 2007 built in. Pete

Windows Vista Ultimate: OEM or Retail?

Why? To satisfy you or satisfy me? I just don't understand the mentality: Run x64 even if it's going to make my life harder? Run x64 and make it emulate x86 so I can do all the routine things I do with a computer? That sounds like one of the Mac arguments: you can make it emulate a Windows...

    Unofficial Windows 7 Discussion

I've got news for you, my friend .... There's lots of hardware out there which doesn't run under x64. Maybe most mainstream computer peripherals do, but there's a whole bunch of specialty and niche-market stuff that doesn't. I've spent the last 2 weeks doing extensive homework on the USB...
