How well does the live disk work? I've always shied away from it fearing that it wouldn't support too many SATA controllers..... but that could be completely unfounded....

I did this only yesterday! My weapon of choice is GParted. It's included with Ubuntu, which you can just boot to without installing anything, but there are other ways to use it.
