A bit of a late reply, but I ran into a similar issue, and started the RMA process. I also had a 780TI DC2 that had given me random black screens since day one.
Getting the RMA was not a problem, but I just received the new card yesterday. The holidays probably didn't help processing time...
I picked up one of the 5870s from 1SaleaDay on the 6th, and it arrived yesterday. It looks a bit refurb'd for being a new card (as advertised), but seems to run well enough. It is a reference design.
500/500...Yeah, you can get more out of that card. An X850XTPE runs at 540/590. You can try hitting that. My card even does it now, and it has pretty much the same core/ram as yours, so everything should gel.
I'm glad it's now stable for you. I spent 45 minutes last night playing NFS Carbon at 850XTPE levels, not a single glitch. 100% rock solid stable for that amount of time. The funny part is that my core refuses to OC as high. Before I could hit about 590, but now it'll flake around 562, not that...
I found the instability problem! There are two power mosfets off the power plug. I put some small Zalman heatsinks on them (1 per each, same ones that come with VF900) and my checkerboard screens are gone. The transistors are on the core side of the card. I burnt my finger on touching them...
Wellp, the volt mod went fine enough. It didn't seem to help anything, though. My core voltage I found out is a solid 1.4, and will dip to 1.39 under pretty much any load. My stability didn't increase, though. I decided to stick my hand around on the card to feel for any warm spots (no...
I don't have a problem with temps, actually. My gpu registers a max temp (when the room is 80F) of 47C, with an ambient of 37. I'd say that's plenty cool. I had it running find max mem in ATI tool and it was running smoothly at 613 Mhz on ram (stock core speed). I moved the window, and got the...
Well, I finally figured out the vdd Vmod myself. And so far I upped the voltage from the 1.9 to 2.08 (710 ohms), so I'm happy enough with that. Hopefully that'll give me the extra boost to get to xtpe levels. I'll comment back and let everyone know how it goes, or if it even makes a difference...
Well, I finally got my card to crash at 560/550 in NFS Carbon. Lowered it to 540, and I haven't seen any problems after about a half hour. But jeeze, only a 50 Mhz gain over stock is pretty craptacular for 1.6ns ram. My biggest problem is that I need to know exactly where to vmod my card, but I...
What game are you getting 6 fps in? And what are the settings to do that? I have a 32MB AIW Radeon (no number model on it) with an Athlon XP 1600+ (Palomino) and that thing runs circles around a P4 Willamette 1.5 with a Geforce2 MX400 card. It actually gets better framerates. Go figure.
Yeah, I remember reading that you were springing for the 6800XT...didn't like it much, eh? They were a fair sight better than even a vanilla 6800, but seriously sucked in the grand scheme of things.
Hmmm, that is interesting. Mine is a Sapphire blue GTO AGP with R480 and 1.6ns RAM. Oh, yeah, you said you did the volt mod for the ram on the card. Do you have any pics you could post of what goes where? I'm very interested to know where to put the stuff for the ram mod primarily, as the core...
