First of all: I don't want to spark a fanboy debate, so if you want to argue over which is better please start your own thread so that it can be deleted separately.

Basically, I'm away at uni and my PS3 is back at home, and as I've got a long train journey between there and where I'm living at the moment I want something to game on during those journeys and when I have a bit of free time. I used to have a PSP, but sold it soon after buying my PS3 because I didn't have time for both. It was pretty cool, but to be honest the games didn't seem that different to anything I'd played before. (I think I had one of the Burnout games, Final Fantasy Tactics, Sid Meier's Pirates (great game), Tekken, both GTAs (ok but nothing compared to the full games) and Daxter (pretty good but not amazing.)

However, I'm looking to now either buy a DS or reinvest in a PSP. The price tag isn't a huge issue here - I'm happy to buy used games, but I prefer to buy the hardware itself brand new. With the DS I'm tempted by Mario Kart, Zelda, New Super Mario Bros., Advance Wars Dual Strike & Final Fantasy IV and with the PSP I'm most tempted by God of War & Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII,. I'm not really interested in sports games or first person shooters for a portable console, more platform games and RPGs.

The extra multimedia features aren't essential, I'm much more interested in gameplay, so I'm really interested in the opinions of people that have played on both consoles. I am aware that there is a new DS (the DSi) coming out here next year, but I want to buy whichever I go for within a week so that's not too relevant. I'm not sure whether I'd get the PSP Slim & Lite or the new 3000 version, that's another area I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for your advice,

Jimmy

The PSP is really good at being an mp3 and movie watcher etc but for games I thought it was meh, I mean the games are half assed ports from the ps2 and the DS is incredibly addictive especially the little games like wanted etc. I'd say go with the new ds that has a camera and other new features while being lighter but doesn't play gameboy advanced games.

Frick ... I skimmed through it lol well'd still go with the DS especially since you don't need the multimedia capacities and the browser on it kinda sucks.

PSP!! Save's you tons of money since you can download games and on the DS you can only buy games (unless you can get a R4 or an M3)

I can vouch for the DS. Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass is awesome, easily beats the Wind Waker in every aspect. New Super Mario Bros is the best there is, I spent HOURS playing and still do. Mario Kart is my current favorite, just try to get a 3 star rating on the 150CC class, I have done it twice. Brain age 1 and 2 are incredibly fun and cheap. Wario: Master of disguise is tons of fun and a new type of game.

I would say psp if you have a ps3 you can turn your ps3 on through the internet and if you have a ps1 game in there then even better! you can play that on the internet that and psp can give you music and movies and has pretty good games that I enjoyed a lot as does the ds, but either or...I hear the ds battery is LONG....but you can upgrade your psp battery so it doesnt matter....you can also emulate games on it, just dont update it im not sure if they made a newer version of the emulator yet but yeah....my vote is for psp, unless you really like a dual screen and to touch things and kinda kiddy games but still good games! ds also has a lot of rpg's which are innovative which is why I may get one later on, psp is still my favourite, but I've been seeing lots of good games coming out on the psp:

Super Stardust Portable

Garnet Chronicles(RPG)

also look up Patapon(great game for psp)

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41519.html
TotW: Radiant Mythology 2(RPG i think, play the first 1)

another game looks like a zombie game :D

if your a fan of Final Fantasy

Dissida: Final Fantasy

another cool RPG

Listen guys, make your opinion on what he's stated he prefers, not what you prefer! I have both a DS and a PSP and i play them both alot, but if it wasnt for the fact i could play PS1 games on my psp, i'd defintley be playing the DS alot more as it has alot more rpgs (my main games)

You like Platformers and Rpgs, well then the DS is defintley the way to go, you've got tons of platformers and rpgs, and many many more to come, with lots of unique games that almost anyone can enjoy aswell. One more plus for the DS is that it's alot more popular, meaning there's also alot more games in general for it. Though there is also a few final fantasy exclusive games coming out in 2009, with a new parasite eve aswell, for the psp.

Either way you cant go wrong with any of them, but in all honestly, it sounds like your looking for a DS. :toast:

Edit: Also, don't worry about the DSI, the improvements arent a nessecity like they were with the upgrade from the original DS to the lite, and the same goes for the psp 3000, reviews state that the 2000 version is the one to buy, because the 3000 has many screen related issues with games.

id personally go with the psp im getting the god of war bundle and its good stuff i mean im a multimedia guy im always on the go another reason why i got my iphone..but at the same time its a 3000 series psp and its good stuff its lighter and better built and the screen has been changed a little bit it has alot less glare (incase the sun is setting on that train of yours) and the colors are alot more vivid. and though i love nintendo only games (like zelda) you cant really beat the black and white genres of the psp i can go from playing ratchet and clank a fun simple game that will keep you entertained for hours to a hard core sweaty palm ass kick fest like god of war....or dynasty warrior or to a simple street racer like midnight club...i just honestly think their are alot more open feilds with the psp than the ds. that and imo it has more mobility...while the DS may be light or slim it isnt the shape of a psp its hard to put in your pocket unlike the psp which i personally find goes more places easier weather it be pocket or small backpack pocket or side holder and it sits in your hand better if you need to hold it at your side or something. its also easier on the thumbs i think like the knuckles dont hurt so bad like they might on a DS because you have a very small playing area.

EDIT: @Infinity did you ever play star ocean till the end of time...its F$%ing amazing thanks for that link im totally getting it.

first of all Jimmy, welcome back, how the hell are ya, where the hell ya been. Secondly, this may be immoral, but both are awesome for playing free stuff on. Honestly, if you can afford it, get both of them. The DS has alot more games though, but the PSP is getting there.

I'd go PSP as the DS hinges break easy. All though you can buy now cases for them though.

All so a good about DS's is that you can use any games from any country.

I've had both and I think the DS is better. Yeah the PSP is more for the adult(18 and older) crowd but if your a big kid then you'll love the games on DS(I still can't believe my girlfriend, almost wife, plays the shit out of her DS). Graphics wise the DS is SO MUCH better than the PSP. The biggest issue I had with the PSP is you either had to stick the pos in a bag or get those screen protectors were with the DS you just fold it and stick it in your pocket.

but with all the power connectors, memory cards and just added stuff you should have a case for everything anyway. unles it stays home, but i got mine for my 9 year old and he'stakes it to gma';s,. his friends and all over the place, so a bag is essential, plus with homebrew, there is not much it cannot do, web stuff, mp3, movies, radio and much more...

i don't know how much i can talk about the seedier side of PSPs. but once you get the know-how, i'd say get one of these babies. as others have mentioned, movies, music, photos, net browsing and emulation (something i've recently gone into) epsecially for an old Amiga dog like myself being able to play the classics portably is a God-send

I say get a PSP and smack some homebrew firmware on it and you can do anything with it.:)
I don't have any homebrew stuff on it because my firmware was already to high but i love how it interacts with my PS3.

Jimmy

PSP disappointed me because the games are not memorable and end up becoming boring. I owned GoW, FFVII: CC, and Disgea: Afternoon of Darkness but never really went back to them. So far I've replayed FFIV 3 times, I have every single Pokemon to date, and I still play things like Mario Kart online with friends. As for media... you can fix that with one of those special cards for homebrew. The DS is made to be played with while the PSP looks cooler to the person watching you than you will ever find the experience itself.

Long made short... I don't play PSP nor do I own one anymore. When I worked at Gamestop we hardly sold PSP, and when we did we got a lot of unhappy returns/complaints from customers about how their kids never played it etc etc...

Easy question-- Answer: DS

I think I am leaning towards the DS slightly... it's cheaper and the games seem more original. I have to admit, when I used to have my old PSP, I hardly ever took advantage of the multimedia features because I have an iPod for music and don't care much for watching videos on the go. As for the web browser - well I've lived this long without it! I'm still open to further suggestions though - I'll probably be ordering in under 24 hours mind!

ds is like a wii, psp is well like a console.

ds is more interactive and fun.. psp is more in power and uses controls,.
