How long will Socket 939 last. I'm planning on ordering from newegg, and if it's still going to last a while (since there's really no difference between 939 and AM2 besides DDR2), I'm getting it then. Thanks, I really look forward to getting my first AMD soon!!

This look good? Last me a while?
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB SATA 3GB/s HDD
1GB GigaRam Dual-Channel DDR 400
Either:
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe Socket 939 ATI Radeon XPRESS 3200 CF Motherboard
or
DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 nForce 4 Ultra Motherboard

Everything else, I have. Can always upgrade/add to a new processor/HDD/RAM/Graphics later (especially CrossFire cards). Thanks TPU members, will be waiting for your replies when I wake up.

More CPU's are produced for the Socket 939 architecture than there are for any other PC platform and that applies to both sheer numbers and widest range of models. The last time such a broad industry acceptance for a specific socket occurred was with the Socket A which lasted a decade. DDR2 offers such a marginal gain in performance (when it does have one at all) that I see no reason why it would bump the 939 off the mainstay lodge anytime soon, or erver for that matter. In order to replace an industry standard you need to come up with a product that is clearly superior, much faster, more reliable and which can be produced at reasonable cost. The AM2 doesn't quite cut it.

That depends on how often you intend to upgrade your CPU. The 3200+ will last you about a year but if you intend to run a CPU for 18 months to 2 years then you'd be better off getting a 3700+ San Diego or even a 4000+ San Diego. These are single-core CPU's, dual-cores still have too many issues and they're a poor value, in my opinion. For example the 3800+ X2 costs $50 more than the 3700+ (single core) but trails it in benchmarks.

Thats what overclocking is for... 3700's are a waste of money IMO. 1 mb of L2 and the same overclockability of a processor that is 1/3 of its price, the Athlon 64 3000+...

An overclocked single core Athlon 64 will last a good while. The longer you wait until the next thing the longer you wont have a PC.

I'm Interested In hearing about these "Issues".....other than the fact that the 3700 Is 2.2gig and the X2 3800+ Is 2gigs......what Issues are you talking about?

I've had my X2 3800+ for a year now...and It does It all......and seeing as how It's going to drop to $169 on the 24th......theres little reason to continue to recommend a Single core CPU over Dual.

My X2 3800+ Is at 2600Mhz putting It In the FX 60 realm($800+) minus the Extra Cache......but......I'll take that kind of "Poor Value"

Leave some Links to the "Issues" you say Exist please.

well, basicly theres only issues relating to the performance hit that cpu´s with integrated memory controller take with High latency DDR2

Socket 754 is still available because some Semprons are still sold on them, including some versions of the Venice 3000+ for example. Socket 754 will disappear first, but that will probably be by 2007. Then Socket 939 I suspect will disapear by 2008 as soon as socket F will get in place. This logic I used is basically that there will for now on always be at least 2 sockets for AMD in circulation.

It's the same with intel, they still have the 400+ pin sockets around, but the new 700+ pin sockets is there and will be there for long since it's the base platform of the Core processor.

I can always upgrade later to a new processor, like when dual-core actually beats single core and there are more multi-threaded apps, I'll get it.

Should I go then with the setup I listed above? And what's better, the Asus motherboard or the DFI motherboard?

Thanks,
-Azn

In my opinion, an OC'd A64 3000+ (s939) should last a LONG time. I think the only thing that will make the current A64 line obsolete is actual usage of the second core in a dual core system . Until then, I'll be sticking with my 3800+.

change the WD drive to the 250GB one, you get the extra cache for ncq that helps a lot. rest looks fine really.

I already have a 250GB Seagate w/ 16MB cache. Anyways, besides that, what if I change the DFI LanParty UT nForce 4 Ultra-D to an ASUS A8R-MVP, would the ASUS still be good? I can get it for $45.99 w/ the Athlon 64 3200+/
