ok here it is Norton Partition Magic
I will try this first as it stated that my PC might not boot after changing drive letter

The problem with this is that if any of the registry paths aren't changed, the programs associated with them won't work (most likely).

It will ONLY work IF the program used to change the drive letter also changes ALL paths associated with that drive and changes them accordingly.

Any idea on how to change my D: to my C:... It wont let me. I jsut reinstalled OS, I was reformatting C: and i was also installing SP3 for xp, And it was going on the C: so it would not let me install it to C: because i am formatting it. Gr.. Wtf to do?

OK: now i'm confused :(

Correct me if i'm wrong, please:

- You installed your OS in "D" drive

- You were installing SP3 in your OS from "C" drive AND reformatting "C" @ the same time??? :wtf:

I'm confused, dude!!!!

EDIT

TRUE now my Main PC won't boot  don't try norton partition magic as I've tried changing my Windows C: to K: well I'm reformatting it right now

That's what i was afraid of :(

The problem doesn't reside with the registry only: suppose program "A" stores some of it's operating paths NOT in the registry? How does the program that changes the drive letters and associated paths in the registry know that?

ok here it goes I am reformatting my PC as of now just delete both the partition of C: and D: and make a new partition and it should be C: now install Windows. After booting it should be C: where you installed windows. Also create a new Partition of D: in your Windows CD

DUH :banghead:

I sure i was getting it confused :banghead:

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong but, when installing the OS into a different drive (not "C" drive), it leaves a few operating system files in "C" drive which are needed for the OS to boot. Should you delete any of these files (IE: formatting), the system will not boot.

why you don't backup every thing you need on both drives then put your XP CD, when it reach format & install part just delete both of your drives then recreate the C that you want it then create the other one, after that format only the new C and install windows on it leave the new D without format after installing windows format from within windows the new D.

When Windows updates some files are put into different folder like mine my Windows letter is @ C: but the installation file while windows update like Internet explorer updating it puts it to drive D: is that what you mean? then you cannot reformat your drive D: because of that

A physical drive (HDD) can have several partitions but you can still call the partitions "drives".

Say i create 2 partitions on my 1st HDD and only 1 on my 2nd HDD: i will have 3 drives in my system, plus any CD/DVD drives, ofc.

Are you formatting from Bios? Or how?

Yes from bios using Windows XP CD.

what is the name of the folder when Windows is updating and what drive did it store?

You can't change the letter of the system drive if you want your OS to boot and work properly. XP is touchy about this kind of things. Vista always name system partition as C: so it always is installed there. XP hold on to the letter of the partition you install it on and you can not change it unless you reinstall the OS and some times you need to recreate the partition itself. IMO:
Make sure you have your XP SN and all the drivers for your system ready. Then:
1. Plug only the drive you want to use as system drive.
2. Boot from XP install disk.
3. Proceed with the installation until you come to the point it ask you where you want to install the OS.
4. There should be one partition. Delete it and create new one. The installation have options to do that.
5. Finish the installation.
6. Plug the second drive. Go to BIOS and set it to boot from the right drive.
7. Back-up the second drive and recreate the partition using Windows Disk Manager or any other tool. This is so you wont have boot problems later on.

If you do all this your system partition will be C:, your second partition will have any letter you wish for and you should have no booting problems.

TEH SIMPLE WAY:
1. Unplug one hard drive(the one you dont want xp on)
2. Format and install xp on the other one
3. Plug the other one in and format it

that is prosuming you dont want anything off either of the hard drives
