Hard Drive problems (clicking)

Hello,
Whenever I turn on, or off, my comp, there's a lot of clicking noises, and I think/know it's coming from the hard drive. It's a 250GB Seagate Barracuda. Even when I acces files, or open anything including games, it clicks, and it's really bothering me a lot. What should I do?

Back up all your files and get a RMA.

Back up. IF it fails before you can finish backing up put it in a freezer in a baggie for a few minutes then try to boot up to back up. Then RMA.

if you have a dvd burner you can use that.

Are these occasional clicking noises, or is this somthing constant? I have a couple Hitachi's that click on occasion. I asked other about it before and was told it was the drives calibrating? (or something), possibly the heads. I'll have to see if I can find my old thread.

Did you ever run Seagate's diag software on it?

It's just when I turn it on, or acces files. If I acces the same files twice, the clicking is only during the first time, gone the second time. I think it is just the plates warming up.

Has it always clicked or is it a new thing? If it's always happened you could try using Systool to turn on accoustic management. The Seagate in my folks old packard bell is always clicking and grinding, but it always have because packard bell sell a load of crap!

Just recently actually...I moved the hard drive one space higher so that my side panel fan could cool it, and I started hearing the clicking sound when I turned on my computer. Really bothers me, but I haven't lost anything yet. I backed up all of the important things I need, and I'm just waiting if it'll give or not.

Sounds odd but could you try putting it back where it used to be and see if it still makes any noise. I thought those barracudas were supposed to be real quiet though.

You using windows? If so if i was you i'd go into the recovery console and check your disk for errors cus you might just have some faulty sectors or damaged files.

Goto bios and choose to boot from cd
boot from windows cd
Choose to go into the recovery console
i forget which one but its either
chkdsk /r
or
chkdsk /f

and then it will search your hard drive and repair.. when you reboot you shouldnt hear anymore clicking.. if you do, your hard drive is on its way out

Recovery Console CHKDSK commandline options:

chkdsk drive /p /r

The chkdsk command checks the specified drive and repairs or recovers the drive if the drive requires it.The command also marks any bad sectors and it recovers readable information.

You can use the following options:

/p : Does an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.
/r : Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

* That's the Recovery Console's commandlines for chkdsk for all of your references...

P.S.=> This doesn't sound good @ all (pun intended) - backing up & archiving whatever data is on this disk is in order imo & those of others it seems after I skimmed this thread... apk

I just saw a thread on [H] where someone was talking about their Seagate drive having a "clunk" sound to it every once in a while. He said he did some research on it and it has to do with firmware and power management. Not sure if it's the same issue as yours, but I thought it might help.

Firmware and management? I'm about to move this comp in another case, so I'm gonna go a clean install of XP, and see if that helps.

You might have the same results, unless you were to disable any kind of PM on the drive (unless that is how you have it set right now). Maybe if you were able to search the Seagate site for a new firmware for your model drive, or even perhaps contacting their tech support to see if it is indeed a matter of firmware, and if there is a new one available for you to try...

If the drives not getting enough power you will hear this clicking noise as well.....I had the same situation happen to me.....I moved one of my 36gig Raptors and rediid some wiring.....fired up and I heard the clicking......Powered down.....took the PSU power cable off and used another one.....Viola...powered up and no clicking since.....have since swapped the PSU for what I have now and still no Issues whatsoever.
