The Taiwanese company MSI are bringing their first EFI BIOS to 3 of their P45 based motherboards. If you're lucky enough to own either a P45 Platinum, P45 Diamond or a P45D3 Platinum then you'll be among the first to try MSI Click out...

.. I'd very much be interested to whoever can and is willing to try the EFI instead of the conventional BIOS and see what they think.

New Type of Graphics BIOS Settings

MSI has started to adapt EFI into its next generation motherboard platform. The ability to use a GUI and mouse provides the opportunity to fully experience the possibilities of MSI motherboards. EFI also supports LAN, pre-OS applications such as live update, games, instant messenger, media player and a browser. Microsoft will add EFI support to the x64 versions of Windows Vista with Service Pack 1.

What is EFI BIOS?

The Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. EFI is intended as a significantly improved replacement of the old legacy BIOS firmware interface historically used by all IBM PC compatible PCs. The EFI specification was originally developed by Intel, and is now managed by the Unified EFI Forum and is officially known as Unified EFI (UEFI).

Benefits of EFI BIOS

* Supports graphical menus and features
* Supports mouse-controlled interface
* Supports pre-OS applications, file oriented (ex: System recovery, games, media player, Internet browser, etc.)
* Supports multi-language
* UEFI support for x64 versions of Windows Vista are included in Service Pack 1.

Download the EFI update here.

That was a pre-release screenshot, but I thought it made the thread look prettier, so go figure?!

As for the release of it, it's apparently been officially released by MSI so that's what I'm reporting. If you're so ahead of everyone, why not post screenies and your opinion?

ok. it has been on the MSI site for a long time;). it is still in BETA though. if anyone wants to use it i have a newer version i can send you. the curent version is 1.07 but i got 1.0B(dated some time in october) from MSI Support:D
i dont have anything to take a picture of it with but this is exactly what it looks like
http://www.hardware.info/images/news/MSI_Click_BIOS_01.jpg.

Overclocking with it is ALOT more stable(instead of being stuck at 420FSB i could go past 470). it has a higher resolution which is good and fits more on the screen. the 32bit colour is sweet and the interface is prety good. mouse control is flawless and has no problems.

some of the problems i found were that if you try and disable the onboard audio you can still load windows but it locks up when ever you try and enter the BIOS. after a while it will just say BOOT FALIURE and you cant boot into windows until you reflash it(clearing the CMOS doesn't work).

the first time you try to boot after flashing it or clearing the CMOS you can only have 1 stick of RAM in the board or it will beep 8 times and restart, then you must clear the CMOS and boot the first time wih 1 stick. after the first time it works with as many sticks as you want:D

after everything is working though it is good and is quite alot better than the normal BIOS(until you get the BOOT Faliure).

if any of that was unclear or you want more info let me know:toast:

I don't have an MSI board, but is EFI the brand of BIOS like Award/Phoenix or AMI? You know if it's possible for a manufacturer to re-flash motherboards with the EFI type, as like an upgrade of sorts? I know my board is aged, but I'd like to contact Gigabyte to see if they'd be willing to adopt it :)

Shame it doesn't support the P5x line, my friend just picked up a P5Q Pro with that P45 chipset, or whatever the chipset model is, something-45 heh

EDIT: NM I'm a tard, the P5Q is Asus.

i'm not sure if this sounds good, it may be a lot easier but wouldn't it also add a decent amount of more variables for problems to happen and a lot more guessing/trouble shooting if something's wrong? i like the current or "legacy" bioses just fine it's plain, simple i kno where everythings at, the entire system is at your disposal in it's most generic form. I don't need a GUI or pretty colors to navigate my computer....it just sounds like another thing that could add system errors when what we have is perfectly fine, no need to fix something that works :rolleyes:

I just remembered something much like this (probably an early EFI?) on my friend's Celeron 333 E-Machines. It had a GUI with mouse support for a BIOS. Was pretty darn cool.

If you have a regular BIOS and you switch to EFI, is that going to fark your windows install? ie. a reinstallation will be needed?

that's an interesting question, and if it is tied to the OS then i don't think will ever use that, now this replaces legacy bios's or it's just like an add-on that simplies things for some people and the original bioses by phoenix and AMI will still be accessable.
