Dead DVI input

Hi all,

After installing a new dvd-rom on a pc it suddenly shows a blank screen after booting. Attaching it on another screen works perfectly. Attaching it via de vga input also works, but has the usual vga problems. I was wondering if it was worth it to have the screen repaired. It's a viewsonic vx2025wm we bought about 3 years ago for roughly 600$, and I'd rather not have to toss it since it's a very nice monitor.

Regards,
Nos

I'm a little lost as to what your asking and what the problem is.
Where are you trying to plug a DVD-rom into, and how can that stop your monitor working?

I have absolutely no idea. We had a power outage, pc worked fine but dvd-rom was broken, so I replaced it. Since then, the DVI port of the monitor gives "no signal" and nothing else. I don't see how it's related, but it's the only thing I changed.

1, So if you take your DVD drive out, will the PC boot and give a picture?

2, Where you saying if you plug the monitor into another PC its fine?

3, What happens if you use the second output on the PC thats giving no signal?

Have you tried the monitor on a other computer? With a DVI output of course.
Checked the DVI cable and connectors for any defects? Maybe try a different DVI cable instead.

//EDIT: Found something usefull maybe.

Most seriously, the monitor’s DVI port failed (monitor displayed “NO SIGNAL,” later repaired) after several days usage on both a NVIDIA GeForce 7900gt and FX 5700 Ultra. (This occurred on a monitor manufactured in June 2006.)

Do you still have warranty?

I'v tried 3 different cables and hooked the monitor up to 4 different video cards, none of them seem to work. I'm no longer under warranty and I'll start looking through those links right away.

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried VGA, or another PC?

Have you tried another monitor with your main PC?

Ive had the exact same problem except for the fact it didnt happen while i was swappin drives. the screen was an early Iiyama prolite HS481 or something like that. theres not much u can do about it unless the monitor is still under warranty otherwise - get a new screen

Both actually, vga works on all pcs, dvi on none.

main PC will give perfect image to other LCD.

Thanks to the links provided here I was able to fix the problem though. Seems something called the EDID on some of these panels is a bit flunky, causing the DVI port to go into permanent shutdown. A tool called DVI recovery was able to restart the port in only a few seconds.

The problem is quite widespread it seems, and only occurs when dis- and reconnecting the dvi port. Wont be doing that for a while :p

Anyway, thanks for all the help. I'm yet again glad I came here for advice :toast:
