Hello all,

I have been trying to get my Sapphire 4870s HDMI out to work in my TV. I have tried with different resolutions, cloned and extended. I get the picture to show until windows starts up. So last thing i see is the loading bar when windows starts up. But after that the tv screen is black. I can drag my mouse away from my primary display but it the cursor wont show. My operating system is vista 64-bit, tv Sony KDL-40W4000.

Full system specs please. Fill them out in user cp. Sound like it may be driver related.

What resolution are you trying to run your display at? It sounds to me that you're using a resolution that's just not supported by your tv. The samething will happen if I do that on my LCD (I use that with my 4850) through HDMI. What is the native resolution of the tv you're trying to hook up with the HDMI connection?

Also were you using VGA to hook up to the tv prior to HDMI or does it not have VGA? If you have both then hook them both up (without whatever other monitor you're using) and see which one will pick up the picture. More than likely the display will be 800*600 on the VGA connection and from there you can adjust the resolution.

When I'm using the two connections (I use the HDMI for higher resolutions for movies up to 1920*1080) I have to select different resolutions because of the different refresh rates and resolutions available between the two connections. For instance I can't use 1280*1024 on VGA at all, but if I switch over to HDMI I can, on the flip side I can use my native 1360*768 on VGA but on HDMI I cannot.

Oh yea! If you have both connections and you switch from one to the other you will have to be on the working one, then switch to the other one for a second or two (no picture), go BACK to the working one and the system will setup the other one as long as the resolution is good, then switch back (the screen will flash and pause for a sec) then it'll be smooth sailing and picture will show up.

Try 1280*720 on your HDMI connection and see if that works

The tvs native resolution is 1920x1080. I have tried from that 600x400 with both HDMI and VGA. But no picture. I tought first it was a resolution based problem because the loading bar shows. I am using the 8.7 catalyst drivers.

Did you try 1280*720 yet? 600*400 I doubt will show on an HDMI connection. Try 'normal' resolutions like 1024*768, 1280*720, and if that works try 1920*1080. When you go to 1920*1080 you may be restricted to using 30Hz as your refresh rate though.

I'm using the same drivers as you.

I'm not familiar with Vista... I'm using my 4850 with 8.7 in XP. The native resolution for my TV is 1920*1080 as well...

What I did was go into my Display Settings and drag the second monitor to the left (since my TV is on the left) and it asked if I want to enable the monitor. Click yes and set it to the 1920*1080 res. That worked for me.

And in order for me to get sound, you have to download the HDMI Audio Drivers from www.ati.com. The install didn't work for me, so I had to manually install the driver. After attempting to install the drivers, it extracted the driver in my "C:\ATI\SUPPORT" folder...

I hope this helps!

I think somehow something shuts the HDMI output off when Vista starts. I can hear a "click" from my tv after the windows loading bar. The s-video out works.
Maybe ill try to install the drivers again.

No help from the new drivers. 2 weeks of straight drinking oughta solve it.

In CCC, go to Display Options and tick the box next to "Force TV Detection". I had to use that to hook my PC up to my HD TV.

Hey Ploomi,

Ever get this resolved ? Think I have the same issue, & is very annoying

I had a really long discussion with ATI about this issue and they thought that the dvi-hdmi adapter is faulty. Finally last week I had time to mail the adapter back to the company I bought it. I doubt this will make any difference but at least I can go back and harass ATI again.

Have you installed the realtek hd audio driver?

Yes I have it installed.

I will post the solution here if it ever gets resolved.

Hey Ploomi,

My problem was the hdmi lead, but guess the hdmi/dvi converter could also be the issue. very weird. from boot up to windows start screen, the secondary display would work fine using the broken hdmi cable. As soon as windows had loaded, the sony tv went black. I could also get the secondary display working when in safe mode. Sounds completely like a resolution issue - but every possible setting in the display manager failed to fix it. Cant explain it, but using a different hdmi lead now works fine.
