new GTX260 - questions...

Got a GTX260 for christmas... love that wife of mine!
core 216, EVGA card.

This is 'stock' benchmark from 3dmark06
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=9434760

The only thing non-stock about that benchmark is that I took of the stock cooler, installed the swiftech full cover heat-sink for the gpu side ram/mosfets and the stock backplate, then my MC60 waterblock. So it's running at 36c idle (ambient temps 72f)

I bumped the clocks up a bit and got this:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=9434948

Now, my questions...

I want to determine that my system (CPU/GPU/ RAM....) is all optimally clocked... What is the best way to do this? (CPU-Z validated - click) Oh, and FYI - there are background services and such running on the PC during all these benchmarks I'm showing you... I have a VMware server running and a guest instance of XP loaded in there too, but it's really idle mostly so I'm guessing it has little impact...

Oh, and by the way - Does the GTX260 downclock??? evga precision shows very low clocks (300/600/100)!

Thanks in advance guys for your powerful advice. Detailed assistance welcomed!

optimally clocked is something thats up to you really....

cant see your system specs, but i'd say for a C2D, the clocks your after are...

around or over 3ghz on a current CPU is plenty

2-4gb of DDR2-800 or better will do just fine

650 core / 1400 shader / 2250 mem - are clocks that if you achieve or exceed will really unlock what the GTX260 has to offer. much more than this at all and you will have stock GTX280 performance right there.

Yes it downclocks and does it quite well! I run my card around 680/??/1100 (at work right now) If you are running DDR2 800, hopefully it's cas 4 since cas 5 will hurt your CPU performance.

If you overclock your FSB more and overclock your card farther you will see those numbers jump!!

I suppose what is concerning is your RAM. 5 5-5-18 at 800mhz is runnin a bit slow. Have you tried tightening up the timings to 4 4-4-12, or clocking the RAM higher?

This is about as far as I can push the CPU. I've been playing with this back and forth for a while now - 3.872ghz seems really stable, no bluescreen 9c errors like I was getting with 4ghz.

So, can I bump the PCIE bus up a bit? or just push the card a little more?

Is 14800 a respectable score for 3dmark06 with this card/CPU combo? please see the links I posted for details...

Leave the pci-e bus at 100 just tweak your card more.

Would it be appropriate to gather that intermittent, periodic "lags" are from memory that is clocked too high?

thanks.
it appears that i can't get my ram up to 1100 then... but the water cooling is enabling a good core overclock...

I'm going to test 691/1490 with 1080 memory clock in the morning.

i see u have the gtx on water, so u could flash ur card to run the core on higher voltage. just check the 260/280 sticky thread.

Yes.
I'll have to look at that. Water is great, but the method I'm using only covers the CORE with the waterblock. The ram and mosfets are under a full cover heat sink, but it's passive cooling. The good news is that I played Supreme Commander Forged Alliance for 2 hours and the temp max was 44.

That's the best method. FC blocks do not offer more when it comes to the GT200 cards. Great temps under load.

are you using Microsoft Windows Server 2003 it's not for gaming I'm sure about it try XP sp3 or vista sp1 ultimate and you'll see your GTX260.

Right.
3dmark06 does not even report the GPU clock speeds correctly (0mhz!). XP 64 rocks.

My best tweak level so far is 14886 on 3dmark06.

are there other benchmarking / testing tools (free) that might help me tweak this a bit more? I'd love to hit 15000 on a single GTX 260!

top -
(sorry)
Any other benchmarking tools that I can use to tweak a little more go out of my system? Is 14800 a decent score for a dual core e8400 with a gtx 260?

181.20 drivers seem to disable the "down clocking" of the card when not gaming... anyone else seeing this?

FYI - best clocks I can seem to get stable on this card -- without throwing the "stuck thread" crash -- is 713 core / 1566 shaders / 1161 memory...

It looks like yours is a dud 260, or you just need to redo the bios. Ask Tatty_One about that. It's pretty easy.

Yes I've noticed the downclocking issue. It will downclock before you use any 3D app, but once you use a 3d app then it's stuck. This is because your card is not a GTX285/295. Good luck man.

happening with me too no reverse back to 2D clock after quit a game or 3d app ... using 181.22 driver right now.
